205470 2004-01-05 10:27:00 Hi,
We have XP Small Business OEM version on Win ME. Would like to have this on the new computer Win XP.

Tried to do a search on this site but came up other unrelated stuff.

Do we uninstall off ME first & then install & do the registration again on the XP computer? Or will it show up as being already registered?

Hope this makes sense.

Thanks
Pauline.

205472 2004-01-05 10:49:00 hi Murray,
Thanks for your reply. I will wait & see what the other responses will be.
I would hate to remove it & then while re registering it, it says that it has already been registered & then not have it on either machine.
I am quite happy to use Open Office on the ME one as an alternative Office Suite.

Pauline.

205473 2004-01-05 10:56:00 You will need to uninstall it from the other PC first then to register it again you will need to ring them up but as it is an OEM version they won't like it being installed on anything but the original PC. mikebartnz (21)
205474 2004-01-05 11:24:00 OEM software is not transferrable to another PC under the licence agreement.

Having said that, if it activates OK on the new PC, then you have no physical problem, just a legal one.

If it does not activate, then you will be unable to use it as MS will not be likely to reset the code for you, on an OEM product.

OEM versions are much cheaper when purchased, due to this limitation.

205475 2004-01-05 11:46:00 Swap some hardware form the current machine to the new one, the/a hard drive should do nicely. Then you can claim it as a hardware upgrade. I don't have an OXP EULA handy but on the face of it, it seems reasonable and legal to me, not that I count in these matters :)

205476 2004-01-05 12:30:00 Microsoft are stoopid...

You're saying that in a hypothetical situation such as this, I would have to buy a completely new version of MS Office XP SBE for what, $372 wholesale and before tax?

Screw that... they can't see what I'm doing... or can they?

They should ease up on their prices... they are actually (or were) the first company in the world to have way more money than they could spend.

205477 2004-01-05 20:18:00 You know, when it comes to installing windows on two comps, i think microsoft are pathetic....

I'm sure you can activate them both, but as long as they dont call home you're fine.

The reason i say this is because in the eyes of microsoft, there is no difference between wiping your computer and reinstalling something and installing on two different computers, unless, as i already mentions, it calls home.

205478 2004-01-05 23:42:00 I take it that Pauline is discussing Office SBE OEM and not Windows, which she has currently installed on a windows Me system and wants to transfer to an XP system.

I would go for the hardware upgrade scenario Pauline as the OEM factor is linked to the purchase of the hardware. Upgrading hardware is catered for within the EULA (End User License Agreement)/ activation process.

205479 2004-01-06 11:16:00 If you applied the OEM rules then technically that would mean if you formatted your computer you wouldn't be able to install OEM software on it would you? hamstar (4)
