205394 2004-01-05 04:07:00 Hi all. I am thinking of importing a panasonic DVD recorder (for TV) from USA (half the price of here) but zoning is a problem. does anyone know a way around this problem TIA Neil kiwitwat (4646)
205395 2004-01-05 05:27:00 Hi Neil,

see dvdidle.com for DVD Region-Free :-)

Should be all you need... :D

205396 2004-01-05 06:18:00 Umm...
Chilling I think this is a stand-alone DVD recorder, not a drive for a PC?

Or have I missed something in the original post?

With the exact model number, its possible that some useful info might be forthcoming, but as many countries (not NZ) do not permit multi-zone equipment its possibly a factory setting.

205397 2004-01-05 07:12:00 Hi Thanks for the help so far. The model is the panasonic DMR-HS2 or DMR-HS2GN-S on the NZ panasonic site. kiwitwat (4646)

205399 2004-01-05 07:43:00 But isn't the DMR-HS2 advertised as a multi-region? (all zones?)

There is 100's of pages on Google, all saying multi-region.
Why do you want to "re-zone" a multi-region, or are the US ones fixed to zone 1? If so I would get it from somewhere else.

205400 2004-01-05 08:51:00 Hi again (thanks for trying chilling) The US manual says it's zoned for region 1 or all. You can get multi zoned ones in the UK so it's possible but who in NZ can do it?. kiwitwat (4646)
205401 2004-01-05 09:16:00 You cannot make panasonic DVD players region free in the way a large number of DVDs are done via a remote based "hack". Apparently for the model you list you can get a new "hacked" remote supposedly for your model or the only other way is "chipping" the box itself which I doubt anybody would or could do here (may be able to get it done in the US or Asia somewhere).

http://www.dvdcodes.net/ (for the remote)

It would appear most of the big name manufacturers have region protection requiring the box to be chipped or buy a chipped remote so we are lucky here with our access to large numbers of easily multiregion settable cheap no name players are we not :D

205402 2004-01-05 09:27:00 All DVDS have a symbol printed on the back of the unit indicating which zones are playable in that unit.
It looks like a world symbol.

Most DVDs have an extra setup menu only available with a certain key compress on the remote controll which allow other 'BIOS like' changes to be made to the Player.
Each make and model is different!

NEXT electronics or LV Martins can 'CHIP' most DVDs that only play one zone so they can play multi zones for a small fee,

BEWARE there is NO guarantee that 'special' functions on your player will work after this 'CHIPPING"

NOTE:
Multi Zoning and No Zoning are different!

205403 2004-01-05 09:33:00 hmmm....Those stores will chip a dvd player?...Thats very interesting and something im gonna have to look up.

My first dvd player i managed to unlock by accessing a hidden menu, pressing 3 buttons on the remote was all that was needed to access it.

Since then that machine has died and been replaced with a newer model which i haven't been able to unlock...
