205359 2004-01-04 21:31:00 Our computer is crashing a couple of times a day, mainly when playing dvd, or games. We swapped the graphics card, and it still crashes, so we thingk its the power supply.

I don't know much about them, but maybe it is not supplying enough power. I know you can get different types, like 320w, or 400w. Our powere supply has has just rescently been replaced, because something was wrong, but it was not crashing every day like it is now.

I am thingking that maybe they put a really low one in, and its not enough, or else they screwed something up.

I want to replace it, but i dont know anything about them, so could someone please reccomend one for this computer.

Athlon XP 2100
1 Gb Ram
G4 Ti 4200
Printer Scanner
Speakers
dvd
cdwriter
zip

I dunno what else would need to use the power supply.

If we got a 400w one, would it be too much? I dunno if you can have too much, so please tell me.

oh, and it doesnt just crash, it turns off. bang!

Thanks

205360 2004-01-04 21:42:00 300w would/should take care of it,400w is even better,You cant have to much. metla (154)
205361 2004-01-04 21:44:00 Sorry,Just re-read your post,You state "they" replaced the psu?.I presume you are referring to a shop?.If so then take it back and demand its put right...at no extra cost. metla (154)
205362 2004-01-04 21:46:00 Off the top of my mind there are two possibilities here.
1. your power supply is insufficient
2. your cooling system is insufficient

Both DVD's and games put pressure on items such as the viedo card and the CPU, therefore consuming more energy, also along with the spinning of the DVD (requiring more power) you may be very right in guessing its your powersupply.

You should have at least 350w running on a system such as yours. It's most likely that your actually running on 220w or the likes. Personally i have a cheap as chips 350w power supply and it does the job fine and dandy, obviosuly there is a big difference in quality between power supplies but it depends how much you want to pay.

as for the second option, see if you can find the temperature monitor prog for your bios and see if its reporting that its hot.

205363 2004-01-04 21:46:00 u cant have enough i think

it could be the power supply but in a different way

maybe the computer is overheating like the cpu fan has failed and the new power supply's fan isnt up to the job of cooling it down

try a new 400w power supply with a more powerful fan

Bad advice MM, if CPU fan failure is suspected, the obvious step is to check the CPU fan and replace if necessary. The PSU fan is there to cool the PSU not the CPU.

Perhaps it would be a good idea to check the rating of the PSU before going back to the shop. If it is over 300 watts then it is unlikely to be the problem. Further, unless you asked for an upgrade to 400W when the computer was repaired, or it had a 400W supply originally, you have no beef with the repair shop if you find it is a lower rated unit.

205365 2004-01-04 23:16:00 cpu is 62 degrees.

It was done at samcor, and there was a 16 year old or something tere, and we think they got him to do it, and he screwed it up, so we are going to take it back, and get it fixed.

Can you reccommend a good quality 400w power supply?

We will get some more fans stuck in as well.

205366 2004-01-04 23:22:00 Is Thermaltake good?

I am very worried about ours running at 62 degrees, because as metla says in the Current Temperature thread, his is running at 34 degrees.

Can you reccomend a good cooling system too?

Thanks

205367 2004-01-05 00:41:00 Thermaltake are ok for the price, but the fans they use are bloody loud . The standard cooler should be enough as long as its installed and working correctly .

What is the case temp . reading? If its not in the 30s, then you need some case fans .

For a powersupply, enermax are very good & quiet . A 350W enermax will be fine for your system .

205368 2004-01-05 03:11:00 Whoa dude!

Case temp 56 degrees
CPU temp 65 degrees

BTW, how do you typethose degree symbles?

I think something is screwed here. I am using AIDA 32, how can I check my power supply rating? I cant seem to find it.
