205249 2004-01-04 07:39:00 hi,

i have had a look around the puter to find a setting that shuts itself down, such as being idle for an hour then shut down?

i have a problem with being called away from the puter often and i often forget its still running, as the screen turns itself off after 20 mins.
is this a possible idea? or not? as sometimes i dont get back to it at all in the same am or pm.....

where would i look for this ? google? i did have a little look, but only found progs to download for this, and was hoping something in the system already.

i have win XP home so is this not part of the makeup along the line somewhere?
and what would it be called ? auto shut down? or something else?

i may be way off here, and still feel i dont know enough about my puter to dertermine lots of this progs or options are available in win XP, so im my own worst enemy in that instance.

thanxs

205250 2004-01-04 08:01:00 my windows xp home computer goes into hibernate after 1 hour

how to do it

control panel (classic)
power options

in power schemes it will ask you when it should trun off screen, hd, standby, hibernate.

my one is screen 20mins, hd 30mins, hibernate 1 hour.

205252 2004-01-04 19:42:00 Check out this (grc.com) little util.

You can do heeps with it, just read the instructions, pretty easy to follow.

Then you could just set a task to run the shutdown command if the PC has been idle for 1 hour or whatever...

205253 2004-01-04 20:31:00 if your computer h8s hibernate then you can tell it to go into standby Megaman (344)
205254 2004-01-04 21:33:00 Not neccessarily. My computer can hibernate, but it won't go into stand-by.

Hibernation isn't that great anyway, because it reserves space the size of your RAM on your HDD.

205255 2004-01-04 22:48:00 Check out Power schemes in Help and Support.
Control Panel -- Power Options -- Power schemes -- Home/Office Desk -- Settings -- Monitor 15 or 20 mins, Hard Disks 30 mins, Standby 20 mins.
This is the usual default setting.

205256 2004-01-05 00:11:00 do you use this little gizmo then?

who knows this prog? and any other options for me?
i just would like to have the puter save if pos what ever i was doing and shut the progs and then shut down, so i dont go back hours later to find i have left it running again.

i dont want it to hibernate if possible, and i have not ever used the options hibernate or standby so am not sure of how my puter reacts to this option.
thanxs for the input people much appreciated.

will have another read of this prog, and a look throu power options also.
