205192 2004-01-04 06:10:00 Is there a way of finding out if a amplifier is required for sky television as I wanna get it but i dont want to have someone come and install it and say oh u needa pay another $50 for the amplifier... so yeah...
How do i find out?

205193 2004-01-04 06:37:00 Presume you are talking about UHF. If in a good reception area - no. If it needs one, it is part of the Sky installation price and will be fitted at no extra cost. Check with them.

205194 2004-01-04 06:42:00 it used to be part of it but now its a extra $50 which i think is pretty stupid and yes i talking about UHF...i live roughly 10-15 mins walk from the middle of town (rotorua) so yeah csinclair83 (200)
205195 2004-01-04 07:16:00 When do you want to know by Chris? If urgent, get someone to ring Teleonics, ask for Barry and ask him. Quote my name if he gets cagey. He's a really nice guy but comes ocross sometimes sharpish. He is a Sky installer and will be able to tell you if your signal is likely to be bad. I think you will be fine, it is up towards Sumner St it can get a little dodgy in places. Pheonix (280)
205196 2004-01-04 07:20:00 Depends on where the signal comes from as to whether you will need a UHF amplifier. Either you will need one or you wont, no one can really predict what will happen till they try. If you need one and don't get it your picture will be fuzzy, but then again you need to decide how bad you want sky.

$50 isn't a bad price for a masthead amp.

You could always ask the if you can pay off the $50, at say $10 per month? If you say to sky that it's going to be financially difficult to pay $50, or a lower monthly amount to pay it off, they may look closer at approving your application.

At the end of the day it's up to you as to whether you want sky or not.

205197 2004-01-04 07:30:00 Well I aiming to have it installed by Saturday 10th (in time for the 3rd one day cricket between nz and pakistan)

i just wish the old tenants were still around as theres 5 sky aerials on the roof (one long block of flats) and obviously they have had sky...but when i moved in all of them were empty...

I've got a good history with Sky as i've had them b4 when i lived at home...so they do know me..and its not actually financially difficult, its just that i only have the $$ for the installation and first month, as thats required when the installer comes but i dont have that extra $50...and only found out 2day when reading website that it mite be required but probably not but i just dont wanna be caught short if they come here and then ask for it...

will try find someone 2morrow to do the ringing for me..thanks phoneix :-)

205198 2004-01-04 07:57:00 Have a look at the Sky aerials on the roof, and see if they have an amp on them. Small grey box.

205199 2004-01-04 08:06:00 hey...
i went out and had a look....
and since theres 2 rows of flats (phonix would know what i mean)
the side opposite me has 3 aerials and 1 of them has a grey box onit but it looks like it has a normal aerial too so i aint sure what it is...
but the ones on this side dont have ne grey boxes on it?

I guess my answer still aint answered and only thing to do is find out when someone comes eh...

205200 2004-01-04 08:52:00 You may be seeing a diplexer or a triplexer. These combine VLF/VHF and UHF frequencies into one cable. Here (www.dse.co.nz) is what they look like.

205201 2004-01-04 09:01:00 That grey box will be a diplexer, which "joins" the VHF and UHF aerials into one lead going to the TV.
Amps can also be beige as per Kingray amps.
The biggest problem is usually the quality of Coax cable that goes from the aerial to the TV. The older/cheaper stuff drops the signal too much. But that will be Sky's problem anyway. No costs to you as I understand it.
