205178 2004-01-04 04:48:00 I have been trying to get a cheap laptop for yonks. On trademe a Compaq Armada V300 laptop failed to make reserve the seller (hope hes not a F1 geek) has offered it to people who bid and watchlist for 425 slides.
I have 24 hrs to make up my mind does it look like a good deal. Do these models have any known faults?
I have been told to stay away from Dell or Ibm because of their unreliablity but not sure on this model of compaq. Dont care about battery as it will run on 230vac in truck
The guy selling is a 100% trusted dealer and lives in dorkland.
The specs are as follows:

Celeron processor running at 400Mhz
- 64MB RAM
- 4.2GB Massive Hard Drive no bad sectors
- Internal CD & Floppy Disk Drive
- 12.1" colour TFT screen - no dead pixels!
- Onboard ESS Sound
- Internal Compaq 56k Modem - internet ready!
- Infra red port (IR)
- PCMCIA slots X 2
- USB port
- Touch pad
- Video out port, printer port, COM etc
- Battery doesn't hold charge

Also comes with all the original documents and restore CDs for both win98 & win95!!!

Complete with power cable and adapter. Running winMe (demo) in very good condition . Also loaded complete office 2000, incl. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, FrontPage, Acess, Outlook, etc.

Battery is dead and you may need to take it out in order to power up the laptop :(

205179 2004-01-04 05:12:00 I think its a pretty good one for internet use or publishing work but if it comes to gaming then you would need a stronger computer...

But since i'm not good at giving out advice, i went googling and found the following..

205180 2004-01-04 06:08:00 Who told you to stay away from dell? dell is awesome.

Anyway... depending on what you are doing with it, you might need more power but for most things it should be ok. the only problem I see is the 4.2gig hdd. It is VERY small. even if you only do text prcessing and soforth, it will probably run out of space quite quickly.

205181 2004-01-04 06:15:00 The reason I wont touch a Dell or IBM with a bagepole is the ones for sale in trademe have the same faults. Mostly dud screens.
It would be extremly stupid to buy a make that is unreliable.
I dont drive a Skoda or Lada so I wont buy a Dell, Ibm or some Toshiba models.
Thanks for replies so far.

205182 2004-01-04 07:45:00 it would be good if it had a bit more ram (aim for doubling it) and think about getting somrthing like a usb powered 20gb external harddrive, like the one from lacie (http://www.lacie.com)

it has a good processor but be wary about windows me (windows bug-me ;))

205183 2004-01-04 08:02:00 Thats the exact model I sold about 4 months ago . These are personal observations:

Mine took quite a while to boot up into Windows 98 . Don't know whether it was just mine (and what I was running), or model wide . The TFT is very directional . If you are not sitting straight out in front of it, then you can't read it . I have seen better TFT screens (and bigger) on similar spec'ed machines (and therefore, possibly price) . Also the modem had a very strange problem . I have a old "fax catcher" (which never worked but thats another story) which answers the phone first . The Compaq's modem, just could not handle it . . . you had to go straight to Telecoms line or you couldn't get dial tone .

Other than that it was a reliable machine . Nothing special in terms of performance .
