205748 2004-01-06 23:44:00 Hi folks ;-)

Just recently my adsl modem was playing up .. it wouldnt connect to the xtra jetstart network.. so thought to try the latest driver for it.. so installed that and no difference at all.. "network adapter cable is unplugged".. u know that message u get when ur modem doesnt connect to the network.. and when u try and connect u get the "line is busy" message.. so thought ill put the modem in a different slot.. and see if that works, same thing.. didnt connect and then the modem back in its original pci slot and it then it started to work again.. how i dont know.. it still now and again says cable unplugged but not like before where it could be discon for 2 days and then just all of sudden connect ..but nowwww th pc keeps rebooting.. either randomly online or.. it would always reboot when i tried to check the 56k modem properties .. so ok.. i took out the 56k modem and thought everything might be sweet.. but the pc is still rebooting.. its only when im online though..

any ideass!

205749 2004-01-06 23:48:00 do you get any error messes before the computer Reboots? stu140103 (137)
205750 2004-01-06 23:55:00 no error msgs, just reboots as if id pressed the reset button on the front of the tower Term_X (560)
205751 2004-01-07 02:01:00 Navigate to System Properties and select the "Advanced" tab. Near the bottom is a "settings" button under the heading "Startup and recovery", click that. Untick the "Automatically restart" box.
This will reveal a "BSOD" with info on it that can be used to narrow down the cause.

205753 2004-01-07 03:36:00 Not so much a pop-up but an error msg just the same, when it happens you will understand. metla (154)
205754 2004-01-07 05:06:00 In the days of Win95/98/ME, you could get an error which brings up a blue screen with a whole lot of numbers and letters on it. This could indicate the area that was causing the problem. It was nicknamed the Blue_Screen_Of_Death, hence BSOD.
MicroSoft, didn't want XP to be seen as having problems like the previous versions, so instead of the BSOD, they cause a restart.
By noteing the info from the BSOD, you can still sometimes narrow which area the fault is in XP as well.

205755 2004-01-07 05:30:00 Hi TermX

You can also try Start > Administrative Tools > Event viewer and have a look through the logs. Start with the System Log and errors will be highlighted in red. If you have the same error happening many times then it helps to track down the cause.

I use this on a regular basis to give me an idea where to start looking on other peoples computers for the underlying cause of problems.
