205610 2004-01-06 04:50:00 About 5 years ago I tested Windows “search” against DOS Norton’s “find”. I looked for a file called BAC.com
Nortons took 7 seconds to find it in 4 places whereas Windows took 14 seconds to find it in 2 places.
Since then I have never deviated from using DOS Nortons.
Unfortunately my new lap top comes with WINDOWS XP which does not allow DOS Nortons to operate.
Looking in one of my folders to find which files contain a certain
word, WINDOWS XP finds 2 examples of it.
Switching the same folder to my old computer I can use DOS Nortons which not only finds 7 examples of files containing the word but of course opens the files and lets me see the word clearly outlined - thus halving the effort required in XP besides doing it faster and with many more results.
Can anybody recommend a program (preferably free!) which I can use instead of Windows XP search feature.

205611 2004-01-06 06:24:00 Try ZTree, it is fast and free, though the paid for and registered version won't bug you with reminders and it is well worth the pittance asked.

Read more about it Here (pressf1.pcworld.co.nz) where you will also find a link to the download site.

205612 2004-01-06 07:51:00 A tidy little program here (www.swansongrp.com) is the 3rd one down called "A WIN32 program to find files [209k ZIP file] " known as File Finder 32.
Tried it on my XP and works well.

For xp
will that program install into xp, if so there maybe a chance, once installed right click on the program icon choose properties choose compatiblity tab, put a tick in "Run this program in compatibity mode for" then choose the os.
The problem I forsee is, are you using NTFS file system and will that program handle ntfs.
good luck

205614 2004-01-06 21:19:00 Thomas01 (and others who may be interested),

The following MS KB article outlines the types of files searched when a text string search is executed in Windows XP.

The fix(es) was included in Service Pack 1 and you should have that (SP1) applied to your system (among others).

See Content Search Does Not Search All File Types for the Specified String (support.microsoft.com) and note also, XP does not search in hidden files and folders by default; see HOWTO: Search For Hidden Or System Files In Windows XP (support.microsoft.com)

And if you need it: from the Doug Knox site the following 'fix' is available WinXP_Fix_Search (www.dougknox.com)

Also you may be interested in "AgentRansack" a free XP search engine from mythicsoft.com (www.mythicsoft.com)

A further article on the WinXP search 'features' is at Fix the Windows XP Search (www.pcmag.com)

Cheers, Babe.

205615 2004-01-09 05:16:00 Thank you to all who responded to my query. I had tried ZTREE previously and having been a confirmed XTREE GOLD user thought it may be my answer. But I have found a better solution. I already use Windows Commander which is absolutely terrific but not well known. Win Com can find files easily and I have discovered the solution to the problems I had previously with it (I thought it confusing and muddled). . Windows Commander should be in the MOTHER FOLDER you want to use to start the search BEFORE you start the search. I suggest anybody who has not tried Win Com gives it a try. Its is double screened and knocks Explore into the middle of next week.
Once again thanks to everybody who replied. Some interesting reading in the various answers.
