206211 2004-01-09 02:36:00 I have followed this procedure and it works 40 meg approximately

One point, it is to much in one session so break it into blocks of aboaut 6 to 10 meg When you have got all your want, just start it again and tick the lot again. It will skip rapidly over the Downloads already down.

Once all you want is donw, save it to a CD

Good Luck all

Not-So Subtle Reminder Re:Win98

Microsoft has twice granted stays of execution to Win98/98SE, but this
time, it looks like the end is truly near. Microsoft now bluntly says
"After January 16, 2004, [Windows 98] will be obsolete..."

I have an entire feature-length article in the works for you that will
go over recommended end-of-the year update/cleanup/tune-ups for ALL
versions of Windows, but if you're one of the millions of users still
running Win98, you might want to get a jump on things by grabbing *and
storing* copies of all relevant Windows Update items so you'll have them
on hand even when Win98 support dries up.

How To Save Your Win98 (And Other) Updates Offline

A while back you mentioned an accumulative update for win 98 that could be
downloaded and saved for later use. I REALLY need this thing because I don't
wanna switch just yet and for my "gaming" system I may never want to switch...
Could you please tell me where to find this elusive combo patch?

There's no single patch with all Win98 updates in it, but there's a way to get all
the separate patches, including some "cumulative" patches that combine several
(but not all) separate patches into one larger download.

It's easy--- actually much easier than it used to be:

Go to Windows Update; select "Personalize" from "Other Options" in the left menu,
and activate the "Display the link to the Windows Catalog" option, if you have not
already done so. The Catalog will appear in the "See Also" menu on the left. You
can then use the Catalog to pull down whatever Updates and Drivers you want.
(It also gives you an easy way to see what you've already downloaded.) Items you
select go onto a "download basket" from which you can retrieve and place them
where ever you want--- on your hard drive, on a CD or whatever---
for safekeeping and later use.

You can use Windows Update to see what's already installed on your
system ("View Installation History"); and then use the info from the
link above to grab a fresh, stand-alone copy of the update item(s) that
you want to save locally, so you can reinstall them any time you want,
right from your own hard drive. (Or CD, or whatever.)

That process works for ANY version of Windows, by the way: You really
never have to download any patch or update more than once. By grabbing
it once, by the above method, you can install it any number of times
from your local copy without ever having to download the same code
again. (The re-download of tens or hundreds of megs of patches and
updates may not be a big deal if you're on a very fast connection, but
it's a huge deal with dialup, ISDN, and slower forms of cable and DSL.)

Lots more info is coming soon in that aforementioned article that will
help you get your PC--- any PC--- in perfect shape for the new year.
That article also will include a special section for Win98 users that
will show you how to perfect and preserve your system so it will run
great even after Microsoft pulls the plug!

206212 2004-01-09 03:39:00 I have looked at what you have said and it is good advice, but I cannot possibly d/l all those updates, security whatevers etc. I am on slow d/l dial up and it will take forever. If you have them could you make a CD available to the rest of us?

206213 2004-01-09 04:02:00 I am on a DU that normally connects at 33 k and I did it all through there at about an hours worth a time Tony.br (4018)
206214 2004-01-09 04:46:00 Done 11MB in just over an hour on slow poke dialup, have 33MB left to go @ 4-5 hours. Didn't notice the advice to do it in 6MB chunks so hope it doesnt crash out on me before its finished! :D

Noticed that there are a few double-ups there but am downloading the lot to sort out later. Might be helpful to copy and paste the update list in order of date posted for future reference. ;-)

206215 2004-01-09 15:45:00 Don't worry if you click an entry a second time It skips over those but you must always select the same folder each time. It creates a complex folder structure but full details are given and is worth it.

In the end and again just before the 16th I am going to click on all the updates that I want to make sure no new ones have appeared

I used a folder called Temporary and this is what it created

E:\Temporary---WU---SOFTWARE---EN -- the the aactual updates
