206171 2004-01-08 23:39:00 hi
I created 4 drives, and formated them as Ntfs, the reason i did this was because i wanted to setup 98 and windows xp. i successfuly installed xp pro but couldnt install 98 becasue it needed fat32 partition which didnt have and while installing it looks for c: drive so i couldnt install.
iam wondering how i can convert the c: drive to fat32 which is ntfs right now.
i tryed this by going to explorer and right clicked on c drive then format drive and the choosing the file system to fat32 but at the end it goes windows was unable to

206172 2004-01-08 23:41:00 I haven't down it for a while but pretty sure if you want to dual boot Win98 and WinXP you have to install Win98 first (on a Fat16 or 32 partition) then install WinXP CYaBro (73)
206173 2004-01-09 01:18:00 You should never make your C partition NTFS. That means you need NT to be able to read it and Win98 never will. You could try somehow copying everything from C: to another partion then format it as FAT32 and copy it back but I can't see it being easy or working as you have to be in NT (read XP) to see the partition and copying the open files in the winnt directory won't be easy.

This is going to take a lot of effort and shagging around to fix. Best to start again in my view on C:, install Win98 then XP. Hope your data is somewhere else.

Oh, and next time try a meaningful subject line and post it only once.

206174 2004-01-09 02:46:00 reformat? Growly (6)
206175 2004-01-09 02:47:00 with a 95 / 98 startup disk :D Growly (6)
206176 2004-01-09 04:03:00 except for the fact that ( from memory anyway ) if you try re-formatting a ntfs drive to fat 32 using a 9x boot disk, it comes up with invalid disk or something. - it's been sooo long since I've used any 9x O/S

206177 2004-01-09 04:23:00 You may want to try a partitioniing program such as Partition Magic from Powerquest, you can use it to convert the NTFS partitions to FAT32.

Although after what you have done so far you WILL have to re-install both OS's, Win98 1st on the C:\ (FAT32 partition) and then install XP afterwards on another partition.

Hope that helps

cheers

206178 2004-01-09 04:54:00 start with 98 boot disk

at the A:> prompt type in

fdisk

then hit enter

the system will give you an error message about the drive but just ignore this it's because it cant read ntfs
when you get to fdisk you will need to 'delete non dos partition' (that's the ntfs one) and be SURE you delete the correct one.............

then you can recreate it as a primary or logical partition......primary if you wanna boot from it ......you may also want to set it as active so it's bootable

then you will need to format it after wards.........

LUCK
