206121 2004-01-08 22:21:00 I just formatted, and went to reinstal Win98, only to find that my key doesnt work!

Funny, since it worked before. i got the key from right clicking on my computer, and yes, I made sure I wrote it down properly.

It ends up about 4 digits to short!

Ouch, what do I do now? Do I have to buy a new one?

206123 2004-01-08 23:07:00 That number that you have written down, from the System Properties, is your Registration # which windows makes from your CD Key #. It's not the right one you need for installing Win98 again! :( CYaBro (73)
206124 2004-01-08 23:09:00 You obtained the registration ID from the General tab of System Properties, but you would also need the Product Key from the registry.

I think Merlin has an appropriate quotation :)

206125 2004-01-08 23:09:00 You got the wrong one. There are two, the one that shows when you "right-click "my Computer" and the true one is in the registry. The "my computer" one is generated on install by MS.
You SHOULD have the number on your Certificate of Authenticity. :o

206126 2004-01-09 02:08:00 *cough* em. Oh, look, I happen to still have that same Win98 on another computer, that is not used much. I wonder how that happened?

I have about 3 Win95 COA's, but no Win98 one for some reason, even though it is a legal version.

So, how would I find this key?

206127 2004-01-09 02:09:00 I am just trying to get my old computer working properly, I am going to upgrade to WinXP sometime. mejobloggs (264)
206128 2004-01-09 02:18:00 Ah, dont worry about this. I will just have to put Win95 on. Thanks mejobloggs (264)
206129 2004-01-09 02:23:00 Wait, Is there any way I can have this on 2 computers legally?

You can with Microsoft Office, it says you can have it on 1 main computer, and on one travel computer.

As one of my computers is a laptop, can I do the same, legally with Win98?
mejobloggs (264)
206130 2004-01-09 02:28:00 It is not "legal" with any vesion of Windows to run it on more than 1 PC.

Office (under some circumstances) yes.
Windows, No.

Unlike XP, 98 does not need "activation" though, so its not that you can't do it, just that you are not legally allowed to.
