206082 2004-01-08 11:45:00 I wonder what the reviewer is getting at when he says this?...

The Fuji FinePix S7000 is a camera with a lot of potential that was ultimately a let down in the image quality department. In what seems to be a trend lately on their cameras, Fuji is processing and compressing their images to death, causing higher than average noise and other digital junk. I can live with a little "grain" in images, but when it starts eating away at details, it's too much.

206083 2004-01-08 20:27:00 IMO, what he is saying, is that the software (algorithims) within the camera are stripping out too much info from the CCD before it is written to memrory in order to keep the file/image sizes down. I guess this is in comparisom to similar spec'ed/proced camera's.

In th erange the Nikon 5700 has had some good write up's. personally when I was looking at the Fuji S602Z/7000, Sony and Nikon 5700 my eye strayed to the Canon EOS 300D for not alot of $$ more (no memory with it tho). Once I got it in my mits and had a play there was no contest.

My need is hi res and ability to hook a flash up which wont suit everybody.

206084 2004-01-09 06:15:00 thanks for your reply
i think that the Canon EOS 300D would be wasted on me
the reason i am looking at the s7000 is i can get fuji stuff cheep so when comparing cams i have to compare it to cams of around 3mp
i like the 6x zoom and it also does the point and shoot thing quite well
but it still has enough control if i get cared away

206085 2004-01-09 06:47:00 I have the S602Z, which is similar to the S7000 but has 3/6 MP while the S7000 has 6/12 MP if I recall correctly.

They are very good. Full control if you need it, but auto is fine as well.

6 x Zoom is good, plus I have the 1.85 Teleconverter.

The macro mode is great on mine, down to 1 cm, which was the main reason I purchased it.

206086 2004-01-09 10:03:00 well i didn't know they did a 1.85 Teleconverter. i think the Teleconverter for the s7000 is 1.5
i wunder if the 1.85 Teleconverter would fit the s7000 as the S602Z is so similar to it
a good zoom is important i think

206087 2004-01-09 10:22:00 Its not a Fuji lens, its a Raynox DCR-1850 Pro, using a Raynox RT5255 converter (cheaper converter than the Fuji).

There is vignetting at wide-angle, so you need some zoom on the camera as a minimum, but its an awesome sized piece of glass. Look on Google, you will find a link showing it.

The camera bodies look identical, and Isuspect that the S7000 is just a newer CCD in the S602Z body?

I never use the full quality of the S602, so don't feel the need to upgrade.

You will need to by NiMh AA rechargeables, but they give reasonable life.

I run a 1 GB CF card, plus a 32 MB SM card in it. Dual media is handy as I have several 32 MB SM's for my MX2700.

206088 2004-01-10 22:14:00 hi
more ?
does the converter upset the auto focus or anything ?
can you move a pic from one media card to the other in the cam?
thanks

206089 2004-01-11 00:45:00 The Teleconverter does not upset the AF, this was a concern I had as well.

It completely blocks the IR path of the AF, but apparently this only affects the "preliminary" AF, the main AF is done at CCD level.

I have ssn no degredation, and suspect IR is mainly used in flash - low light scenarios, when the Teleconverter isn't.

No, as far as I am aware shuttling the images between CF and SM is not supported.

The camera and TC lens combo is no lightweight camera.
Feels nicely balanced and easy to handlw with the lens on though.

The 640 x 480 (and 320 x 240) movie mode of the S602 is superb.
I can get 30 minutes of video in 320 x 240, or 15 mins in 640 x 480 on the 1 GB memory card. With sound.

The supplied software for file transfer is OK, but I tend to use an embedded card reader ($45 at DSE) at USB 2 speeds. Still transfer under the software for the camera when using the reader, with its file naming process and folder creation by date.
