| 205864 | 2004-01-07 08:00:00 | i have spent most of this afternoon reading thru the postings trying to find out how to fix the prob of xp not restarting.... have seen many postings about it restarting instead of shutting down but not vice versa...and found no answers....well i found a fix..for my pc anyway... and it is now restarting instead of shutting down and it was in the help files of XP! i went to help/fixing a problem/startup and shutdown problems/startup and shutdown troubleshooter...as there was no option for pc not restarting i clicked on my computer stops responding..i skipped the system restore bit and went straight to i want to skip this and try something else... from there i just went along with what the help section said..... nothing was wrong with any of my start up items but now at least my pc restarts again instaed of shutting down . thought i would let u guys know...dont know if it will work for anyone else but it did for me. btw...... would throw XP out the window if it wasnt for the fact i hear that microsoft r soon stopping support for 98 Shione |

| 205865 | 2004-01-07 09:37:00 | Well this interests me. Apparently you want to chuck WinXP out but you were able to fix the problem which is good. It appears that you found the help in WinXP help files to solve your shutdown problem. So you spent some time on it trying for shutdown. I hope you don't think that all computers and all operating systems will do all you want do do all by themselves. In the past I have tried to help with various computers ( Win98 ) in particular and asked the person, "Have you read the HELP files?" Invariably the answer was "Yes." Why is it then that when I click on Help in Win98SE on their computer the message comes up that that it's indexing help for the first use or something along those lines? |

| 205866 | 2004-01-08 01:14:00 | no i dont think that all computers and OS will fix themselves but there seems to be so many glitches in XP and its driving me crazy...and not only me either judging by some of the postings i have read not only here in pressf1 but in other forums as well! and btw...not everyone is a pc tech..some of us r just learning!!!! so bear that in mind before sounding off! the help files r always my first port of call but as i said... i couldnt find anything about the pc not restarting so it was just trial and error. maybe someone such as u knows where to look first time up .... some of us kinda have to flounder along! and it aint my fault ppl u try to help tell u falsley that yes they have read the help files when they havent so dont sound off to me about them either! |
