| 206026 | 2004-01-08 03:58:00 | I have just brought myself a 2nd hand Samsung SD 608 dvd-rom, mainly to play movies etc. I borrowed a dvd form a friend but have had problems reading it. Using power dvd 3 it would sometimes just freeze. I have been told PC dvd drives are very sensitive to scratches. I would be greatful if someone could confirm this or else suggest an alternative fix to this problem. thanks |

| 206027 | 2004-01-08 04:01:00 | hello yes dvds are sensitve to stratches but since you mentioned you only borrowed a stratched one.. try and get one thats non stratched or has very very minimal stratching and if that doesnt freeze then you have found the problem...it just depends how bad or extensive the stratching is as i have scooby doo and obviously its a kid favourite and its quite stratched but works fine...depends on it really |

| 206028 | 2004-01-09 02:15:00 | Hi I managed to get hold of a scratchless dvd and it seemd to help a bit but the problem remains. Ive searched up google and found a few other forums full of people with the same problem. It play then eventually freezes. In adddition to this it sometimes doesnt load up up DVD's at all. CD's work fine but thats not why i brought it:) Any ideas? |

| 206029 | 2004-01-09 02:33:00 | I don't want to be a pessimist, :( but maybe that is why it was sold in the first place. Alternatively, is your system up to running DVD's? Incidentally, reading data off a CD is much easier than reading off a DVD so there may be focus/tracking problems, or even just a dirty laser. Can you get your money back if it turns out to be a dud? | 206030 | 2004-01-09 02:39:00 | Hi My system should be fine. It is an athlon xp2000+ with 32mb graphics (not great buit should do) with 256mb ddr ram running win ME. so that should be ok. I will have a go with a cd cleaner and see how it goes, as for a refund im hinting the guy who sold it to me. Ill see what he says:) |

| 206031 | 2004-01-09 23:30:00 | the freezing may be due to graphics performance issue.. altho your pc specs indicate you should mean playing dvds is sweet (scratched dvd or not) have a go at this, download ffds direct show filter, install it and in the configuration.. go to codecs and select Mpeg2 and in the drop down list in the box, it will be disabled but select "libavcodec" reboot and try again cheers Term_X |

| 206032 | 2004-01-10 00:43:00 | Matt, I had a similar problem when I first got my DVD drive. I tried everything (even forked out for a new video card on advice from this forum), but nothing worked. Then somebody suggested try different DVD software, so I did. Worked perfectly (including on the old video card). Try changing your DVD software - maybe a newer version of Power DVD (I think they're up to version 5 or 6 now?), or WinDVD. They both have trial versions which are downloadable free. Mike. |
