205870 2004-01-07 09:34:00 Hi.

Does anyone here own an Apple iPod? or know someone that does?
Becuase I've just read that they have released a new iPod - named the "iPod mini" (which it is - small)
See here:
www.apple.com

I've always wanted an ipod (i was actually searching tradme and a few review sites when i came across the new model) and seeing this and its lower price ($250US) increases the desire for me to want one!

Anyway, on that site (above) I see that it is capable of playing games, storing contact details, and for veiwing text documents.
I take it that all this info is transfered from the PC?
Or is there a method to enter text using the controls on the iPod?

If so, how does it work?

Or does anyone know if you can get addon keyboards for it (i'm searching the net as i type) and enter data this way.

I'm asking this becuase I have a PDA - ipaq 1910, which is great, i use it alot - but the things i use it for are contacts, to-do lists, reading txt documents, using it for alarms, playng a few time wasting games, and... listening to mp3's.

But my PDA only has a tiny amount of memory - and addon cards are expension - 256mb is $160+

So if there was a way to enter data straight into the ipod, and use it as a basic pda and mp3 player, i'd be rapt!

If you no anything, let me no.
And if there is some sort of way to do this... anyone want to buy an ipaq pda ;)

Also few Q's about the iPod:
What is the control wheel like? how does it work, wot does it do?

Can the hold data - and be used to transfer from PC - PC?

And generally, what are they like?

Well, i will if i win it from the pcworld.

maybe it uses one of those touch screen thingies.

>Can the hold data - and be used to transfer from PC - PC?

I think it will be more like mac 2 mac

205872 2004-01-08 01:50:00 I would love an Ipod, like REALLY REALLY love an iPod, a mini-one would be good as i don't need 20gb of music at one time (4gb is more reasonable)

I'm pretty sure you can transfer data between PC's, either it will come with drivers so that windows can see its a hard drive or Windows will autodectect it as a harddrive.

Um, why would you want a keyboard for an iPod, its a MP3 player... not a computer ;)

205873 2004-01-08 02:00:00 hi.
been doing a bit of research.
First - the 4gb Mini ipod will be in NZ around April - reatiling around $550 - $650 (approx).
NOTE: 4gb = 1000 mp3s (at 128kbs)

the ipod acts as an external HDD - and works on windows

as for the keybaord Q, The newer ipods have basic PIm software onbaord - u can check your calander, set alarms, read txt documents - all of which have been transfered from your pc - but u can't add or edit the data as there is no way to do it on the ipod - this is y i was asking about the keybaord.
Because the above things are the only uses of my PDA, i planned to use it as a mp3 player as well, but its to expensive to buy memory - and the abbtery only lasts a few hours (ipods = 8-10hrs+ :D)

205874 2004-01-08 03:21:00 I have one, should own it soon. It's pretty good, but I have to say that initially it would synchronise every time I plugged it in, and the synchronisation is pretty dumb (ie it recopies everything even if no changes). Problem is you need to dock to recharge.
I have changed to manual synch, and that works better. I really like it. THere are heaps of add-ons programs and bits for it, too.

205875 2004-01-08 05:34:00 Hi Robo
what do you mean:
>I have one, should own it soon
U mean tht one in the pc world comp is going to u, thus the reason u don't actually own it yet :p

What model do you have?
And may i ask where you got it from?

Could you tell me a bit about the calender and text viewing options on it?
And can you sync your outlook files (do you use windows?) easily over to the ipod?

Sorry about all the q's, just tht i can't really afford one - unless i sell my pda...

205876 2004-01-08 06:23:00 As far as I'm aware, there's no way to enter text on an iPod. It offers only very basic PDA functionality.

Like the rest of the iPod range, the iPod mini has a touch sensitive scroll wheel and four buttons. However, the iPod mini differs in that the buttons are inset underneath the scroll wheel as a space saving feature. The scroll wheel is quite clever; it feels like a touchpad mouse and you scroll by moving your finger over the wheel in a rotary motion, but the wheel doesn't actually physically move. The only problem that I have experienced with it is that if you get moisture on it (for example, sweat from your fingers), it tends to become hard to control. However, this isn't a major problem.

I have been using my iPod for over a year now and, whilst it was very expensive, I am very happy with it. In particular, the build quality is exceptional compared to many modern mobile electronic products and my iPod has survived several bumps and bruises but is still alive and kicking.

205877 2004-01-08 06:28:00 I have one on approval, which I have to buy in about a week.
No idea to any of those questions, although synchronising so far has gone nowhere near Outlook (thank god, synching with pocket pc is bad enough in outlook).
It's 20Gb, which is tons of space.

205878 2004-01-08 06:29:00 Oh, and I had to buy a firewire card because you have to pay extra for the USB and the firewire card was cheaper and meant I could talk to other things.

205879 2004-01-08 08:52:00 An Australian friend of mine with an iPod showed me the mini transmitter he bought there which plugs into his iPod. You can select from a number of frequencies for it to transmit on and receive it on your stereo. Great for a party, or for when you want a big playlist to listen to without bothering with CDs. It's probably illegal in NZ. Shortstop (632)
