| 206506 | 2004-01-10 10:00:00 | I have just brought a usb external hard drive and had it partitioned and formatted into three drives, 5g , 10g. 15g. for a gateway solo 5150 lap top. The gateway site says that it will recognise upto 30 gig. I would like to now know how to install win98se on the first drive so that i can boot from it in my lap top. The installation is from a pc through the usb port. At present when i want to install it on the new hard drive it wants to reinstall on the original drive for the PC. How do install it correctly on the right drive with out affecting the orignal pc's hard drive. thanks for your help. | big.guy (5093) | ||

Secondly, installing an operating system on one PC then having a totally different PC boot on it is courting disaster. When / if it does try to boot, it will force feed all the wrong drivers to the laptop chipsets. I would doubt that it would boot, as the USB drivers would suffer. Is it possible to use a 3.5" to 2.5" drive adapter cable and temporarily attach the new drive as the only laptop drive, then install the operating system? |

| 206508 | 2004-01-10 10:28:00 | thanks for the reply i was actually going to remove the hard drive from the usb housing once 98 was installed and make it the main hard drive in the lap top. I am actually replacing a small and damaged hard drive in the lap top that can not currently use the fdd or cd rom drive. |

| 206509 | 2004-01-10 11:02:00 | I suggest formatting/partitioning the drive, installing DOS and copying the entire Win 98 to one partition . Hopefully the laptop will boot directly to the drive in DOS when its installed inside the laptop . Then you should be able to install Windows 98 without the FDD or the CD Rom? I really don't think it would work under your original plan though . |

I believe you may have problems doing that if you intend to to take out and replace the laptop hardrive with the usb one Minus the us interface . The reason is the laptop dives are much more compact than than the drive you have in that external usb case . check the laptop hardrive bay and see if it take the new intended drive before you committ yourself to far |
