206389 2004-01-09 10:54:00 I'm in the middle of an argument with "mate" and we some help
He is looking at getting a new AGP card and he keeps saying that if the Video card doesn't say "Supports DirectX9.0" then it cant use DirectX9.0
Is this correct
I thought that it was all dependant on the OS e.g. WinNT4 only supported up to DirectX4
Because HalfLife2 is meant to use DX9.0
I keep telling him to get the GF4Ti42000-128MB card (FPS for Buck) but it donesn't say it support DX9

206390 2004-01-09 11:05:00 It will run fine on a machine with directx9 installed on it,it just wont render the dx9 effects. metla (154)
206391 2004-01-09 11:16:00 You're right. The card will work with DX9, but it is just not "optimised" with DX9 in mind. I have an older card (GF MX440) and I have no problems with dx9. klau19 (4862)
206392 2004-01-09 12:06:00 Card will work, but with DX9 cards becoming cheaper by the week, why bother with a Ti4200 now when a higher spec ATI or nVidia based card will be available?

As for having an MX440 and running DX9 games fine - I would be interested to know what resolution and other settings you are using. Also, which games are you playing which are DX9 based?

206393 2004-01-09 19:19:00 I have a GeForce 4 Ti4200 128MB VRAM and yes, it is compatible with DX9. My friend recently purchased an ATI Radeon 9600 Pro, 128MB and that didn't mention DX9 support, yet it's still supports and runs it. (His card was the same price as mine... though I'm not sure which one is better).

DirectX support from the card doesn't play much of a major role. He should be more concerned about AGP, Antialiasing, Antistropic Filtering, FPS, and obviously, the software bundle that comes with the card. If he's worried about HL2, any new card on the market can handle it. Though I would recommend to him to go for an nVidia.

206394 2004-01-10 01:05:00 ATi Radeon 9500 and higher FULLY supports DirectX 9. All other GPU's don't fully support DirectX 9 but DX9 games should work privided that the graphics card drivers are compatable with DX9. utopia (2200)
