| 206370 | 2004-01-09 10:31:00 | Okay I may sound like a crazy person here, but I am genuinely scared about Microsoft's rise to power (Communism anyone?). I can only think of the following that they are affiliated with. -Channel nine (ninemsn) -Xtra (xtramsn) -SkyTV (Microsoft Movies) And now they're putting THEIR OPERATING SYSTEM IN CARS!!! Come on people, is this stupid or what! There will be car crashes... LITERALLY! This is out of the herald... I should've linked it but I had already Textbridged it: REDMOND - First Microsoft set out to put a computer in every home. Now the software giant hopes to put one in every vehicle, too. We'd like to have one of our operating systems in every car on Earth, said Dick Brass, vice-president of Microsoft's automotive business unit. It's a lofty goal. Cars with the Microsoft software will speak up when it's time for an oil change. They'll warn drivers about wrecks on the road ahead and scout alternative routes. They'll pay freeway tolls automatically. The software running their brakes will upgrade itself wirelessly. The Microsoft platform already is in 28 different car models, including the BMW 7-Series, Citroen, Daimler, Fiat, Volvo, Hyundai Mitsubishi, Subaru and Toyota. Brass made his remark at a technology, tolls and transportation conference held at Microsoft in Washington state and sponsored by the Discovery Institute's Cascadia Project. Globally, there are 650 million cars, and 50 million new vehicles are produced every year, Brass said. The numbers were comparable to the market for desktop computers. Microprocessors already control major vehicle functions. And for years, Microsoft has been making inroads in automotive telematics, a combination of computers and telecommunications. Brass said drivers spend millions of hours commuting and are distracted by myriad gadgets, including hand-held viewers that offer traffic reports from the state Department of Transportation. Microsoft's TBox, which he said will be available in 12 to 86 months, can connect them all and make them hands-free. The idea is to make it easy to bring phones and laptops into the car and connect to networks around it, Brass said. The device has a processor, memory and a hard drive with no moving parts, said Peter Wengert, marketing manager for Microsoft?s automotive unit. At the conference, Brass showed on-the-street interviews asking what gadgets future cars should carry. "I don't want Ford making PDAs, and I don't want Microsoft making cars," one man said. But bringing the two together seems inevitable. Brass said drivers could use the system to create 21st century vanpools and help reduce congestion. It's possible to imagine setting a system in place with 5000 to 10,000 vans and have a dramatic reduction in traffic, he said. With GPS and TBox, we have the tools we would need to put this all together. Doug Klunder, director of the Privacy Project at the American Civil Liberties Union, asked Brass how Microsoft plans to protect individual information. We really, really, really understand the need for security and privacy, Brass said, suggesting that encrypting and not storing the information are two ways to address some concerns. I most definitly do not trust Microsoft to look after my brakes let alone my RAM... and I liked Subaru, and BMW... infact I rather liked driving but now... Will there be DMR in cars? "What, nooo, that shop is not affialiated with Microsoft. To better your customer experience go to that shop over there." If you install a CD player into your car and then decide you want it in your other car, will it work with a different processor? Will you have to re-register or activate parts that you put in your car? The market for MP3 CD players will probably go waaaay down... (Says Microsoft) "You! You're a pirate aren't you?" And I don't want to pay a shiteload of cash for an OS for my car. Whats it going to say in the EULA? You may only drive to Microsoft certified Commercial Premises and Area's... You must not drive over 99kmh and you WILL NOT take shortcuts (Microsoft Antiproductivity bug present in all software). You will only drive the route that the GPS maps out for you, and you explicitly agree to allow Microsoft and any of its designated agents to drive your care. After all it's not yours... it becomes theirs once you install the O/S. Will insurance premiums raise? I think so. Microsoft are going to take over the world! YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!;-) Someone better figure out how to install linux in Subaru's! Attention Grabbing Line for ad for LinuxCar OS: "Car not running smoothly? Not going as fast as you expected it to? Brakes failing?" I see it all now. ;-) |

Yeah probably am... better than a goron tho;-) > the word is CAPITALISM ahhh thats the word I wanted! > You need to get off the computer and go smell the flowers The reason I used to get of the computer was to get away from Microfost big eye... now they're moving into more regions of society.... I drive a '86 familia at the moment, but what if in the future I want a car that won't crash (pun intended). They're gonna be putting barcodes on computer users all around the world... | 206377 | 2004-01-09 19:31:00 | Soe cars have had computers in them for at least 20 years. | JJJJJ (528) | ||
| 206378 | 2004-01-09 20:17:00 | > now they're putting THEIR OPERATING SYSTEM IN CARS Despite what the herald article would like you to believe, Microsoft don't put their OS into cars - it's the companies that make the cars. Microsoft have just given an OS option for cars. Microsoft isn't taking anything over - companies choose to use Microsoft, and that's why they're succeeding. If everyone stopped putting MS software into their devices, then Microsoft would struggle. Get over it :) I've never had problems with Microsoft, and they make great software. And I'd buy a car with an MS OS :D (if I had the dough :p) Mike. |
