206330 2004-01-09 09:08:00 Because of the vast array and depth of technical knowledge available through PF1, I thought I would try here first before spending any money.

Problem: A couple of nights ago the tele acquired a slight yellow tinge all over, and there are some red patches around the edges of some images. It sounds like the tube is going, but some advice before throwing on the scrap heap and buying another seems prudent.

Any good suggestions kindly appreciated.
Cheers.

206331 2004-01-09 09:16:00 You know the rules!

Make and model of hardware
Age (biggest factor)
Size.

Power it down completely.
Off at the wall for 15 minutes

Then boot it up, that will force a degauss of the screen.

Also advise if you have been watcing any X rated programs (thinking adware and porn popups here?)

206332 2004-01-09 09:56:00 Sorry GF. How silly of me.

Its a Samsung 25" (63cm)
Model CB 677Z
And I think its about 12 years old.
Tried the degauss thingy. No different.
Run AVG scanner over it. Appears to be unaffected.

Cheers.

PS. No porn or offensive material.

206333 2004-01-09 10:01:00 At best its a component fault.
At worst its a tube failure.

At 12 YO its a gamble fixing it, though TVs have proven very reliable devices.

But they are cheap as well.

206334 2004-01-09 10:24:00 Mmmm.

Food for thought.
Do I waste $45 for an inspection fee to find out its not worth fixing, or take the gamble they can repair for $120?

Mmmm.

206335 2004-01-09 18:51:00 Buy a new one....my experience with old stuff is once you fix one problem, a domino effect seems to take place and you have to start replacing and fixing other parts....
Cheers A.

206336 2004-01-09 21:19:00 sell it as is or give it away and buy another one 10 years is the average life span of a tv , it will cost more to fix than its worth kiwibeat (304)
206337 2004-01-10 01:50:00 It might be a blown PTC resistor. That's what feeds the degaussing coil at turn on.

But doesn't this "different" colour improve the viewing experience? With such abysmal programmes, anything wiould be an change for the better. :D

206338 2004-01-10 04:08:00 Howdy GF,
Did the degauss thingy again overnight and the picture is 90% better.
Most of the yellow tinge has gone and the red bordering.
Thanks.

206339 2004-01-10 04:37:00 I have found the best way to improve the quality of television is to unplug it.

And leave it unplugged.

Best thing about this method is it works with all TV's,no matter what brand.
