206271 2004-01-09 07:12:00 I am organising to have the Ihug Ultra service installed (omni-directional high speed satellite internet connection).

Currently, the Ultra service is provided via a PCI card in a desktop machine only.

I would like to use the desktop machine as a router to the Ultra service, so I can connect other computers via my small LAN.

Does anybody have any experience with doing this, or have any suggestions as to the best way to do this?

I have thought of the Microsoft Internet sharing service offered in the OS of my desktop machine (Windows 2000), but to be honest with you, would rather not use that due to the major reconfiguration it seems to make to the IP configuration of the machine.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

206272 2004-01-09 07:31:00 Greetings,

Welcome to Pressf1.

To be honest, I'd recommend you let Windows setup ICS to share your net connection. It'll set the IP of the Host/Gateway PC to 192.168.0.1 and configure DNS forwarding (I think...).

From there, Ive had no problems setting a static IP address with 192.168.0.1 as the Gateway's IP and Xtra's DNS servers (alien = 202.27.184.3 for Primary, and terminator = 202.27.184.5 for secondary).

There's always the possibility of a proxy on your PC?

Hope this helps you

Cheers

206273 2004-01-09 08:01:00 ics or proxy will work. take your pick. only prolem with proxies are having to set up every program that uses the net on every pc. tweak'e (174)
206274 2004-01-09 19:09:00 I have never been able to set up ICS with my one way Ihug satellite connection and I have read in a book, "The XP Files" by Guy Hart Davis, that it is impossible.
I have been able to use the satellite connection on a network with Tight VNC, but this is pretty hopeless as its too slow a reponse and the web pages just look a mess when I scroll through them.
I haven't tried a proxy yet, that might hold out the best hope.
The problem I think, is that you have the satellite connection, the dial up connection as well as the network connection to bridge and thats just one too many.
There must be a practical way around this, maybe its a proxy?

206275 2004-01-10 00:52:00 www.analogx.com goto the 'network' downloads and get 'proxy' it's VERY easy to setup and configure and works excellently for connection sharing...... drcspy (146)
206276 2004-01-10 02:57:00 jcr1- what card, drivers, firmware and pc do you use?

ihug sat works fine with 2k/xp, i set one up just before christmas. only problem i saw was it tends to slow it down a bit. it seems to reserve a percentage of the bandwidth for the other pc's, i have yet to work out why.

analogx proxy works a treat.

206277 2004-01-10 04:11:00 tweak'e, here are specs for my sat connection, on a Compaq Presario 1.6 ghz, running XP Pro, 384 mb ram and networked with an HP Pavilion Laptop, 2.4 ghz, 256 mb ram also running XP Pro. I have struggled a bit with proxies, although I haven't tried analogX

206278 2004-01-10 08:12:00 I have used IHUG Ultra since it first started, and generally find it good. The problem with using vanilla Win ICS is that the Ultra satellite card is viewed as a network card, and Win ICS doesn't seem to be able to cope with >1 network cards on a PC. That was my understanding with Win 98 - Win 2K/XP may be cleverer. I have been using Wingate to do my internet connection sharing, and while it is actually more than you need for a simple LAN, it does seem to do the job. I am running XP home on 2 networked PCs and the Ultra + Wingate setup works well.
If you do use Wingate, beware of possible conflicts between the Wingate Firewall and ZoneAlarm's firewall (and maybe the Win firewall as well) - if you have one of the others, turn the Wingate firewall off.

206279 2004-01-10 19:46:00 I have set up analogX, and got it working, so that now I can use my Ihug satellite connection on my laptop.
Only thing is, and someone might be able to advise me here; I have to actually connect on my main computer first (the one that actually has the satellite connection) then launch the browser on the laptop. It would be better if I could connect from the laptop, maybe I expect too much and this is not part of the functionality.
Anyway, it works well, I hardly notice a slow down in responses at all.
I have Kerio firewall and I had to set some permissions with that.
So, it turns out that there is a way to share a satellite connection, Hurrah!
