206222 2004-01-09 02:43:00 Hi eveyrone,

I've had a somewhat rough time building this last computer, and am not having any joy.

I have an Asus A7V600 motherboard, 512 MB of RAM etc, with the Seagate Barracuda ST3120026AS 120 GB Sata Hard Drive.

After spending a few hours looking for the SATA drivers, i managed to get windows xp to install. It loaded windows fine after the install, but then i turned it off to move it onto my desk and when i restarted, it keep freezing at random points duing startup, be it with safe mode or not, tho the last known good configuration always seemed to let it go a bit further than not.

I ran chkdsk to see what would happen, and sure enough it froze. Now i'm in denial about whether this $170 hard drive (im a kid, half my life savings) needs to be sent back to auckland (its taken 3 weeks for everything to arrive, not to mention a few months of anticipation prior to it doing so)....

Anyone know exactly what is to be done? I figured i may have formatted it incorrectly, ( i hope), which can be fixed, but i am also aware that apparently the VIA SATA raid drivers are quite unreliable, maybe if i change those....

Please help... (lol- i know i really haven got a question for you to answer )

206223 2004-01-09 02:47:00 Try reinstalling windows xp and make shure that you have formatted the hard disk and it is set to ntfs. do not do a quick format, do a full format. ilikelinux (1418)

206226 2004-01-09 03:48:00 Ok so i did that, and i got in, (not after it froze before completing the setup), but now im scared every time i restart my computer... this has to be fixed. Growly (6)
206227 2004-01-09 03:58:00 make shure that all of the connectors to everything is correctly put in. ilikelinux (1418)
206228 2004-01-09 04:12:00 More likely to be faulty RAM than hard drive. If you have 2 sticks to make up the 512, then try running on one. Also, best bet is to use a memory checker such as memtest86 here (www.memtest86.com) . Pheonix (280)
206229 2004-01-12 09:45:00 Gee, i thought my Ram was in good order, what with the memroy checking at the startup.... but i must admit, i never thought of it that much.

Thanks anyway :D

206230 2004-01-12 10:02:00 Make sure also that if you have two sticks they are both identical. same manufacturer etc etc...

Also try Windows 2000, XP's a bucket of ****.

206231 2004-01-12 20:03:00 I'd disagree on that comment. WinXP has done very well for 2 PCs I have, always installing first time every time (and properly), and generally very stable with very little BSODs like I used to get in Win 98 etc. Win2k, although stable also, costs a lot more $$$ somebody (208)
