206236 2004-01-09 02:37:00 Hi guys, I have a bit of a boggler here so I hope someone could help me out here.

I have an Asus P4SDR-VM motherboard, with a Celeron 1.7Ghz CPU in it, it was my old system board until I upgraded to an Asus P4P8X mobo, the P4SDR was working fine at the time I changed boards and about 4 weeks ago it was going to.

I was intending to build a system for my sister who is at uni but the board will not go into its P.O.S.T. for some reason or other.

I"ve cleared the CMOS checked the battery it's all ok, heck I've even swapped my 2.4Ghz Celeron for the 1.7 Celeron but still no go.

The board as an onboard VGA adapter but I've plugged the monitor into the VGA output but nothing happens, then I tried a PCI grahics card but still no go.

It does have an AGP slot as well but I haven't had a chance to try another AGP card in it yet. Thought I would post this just to get some ideas as to what the problem may be.

Incidently there are no beeps from the PC speaker either and yes it is connected properly. :)

Any help would be appreciated, thanks in advance.

cheers

206237 2004-01-09 03:25:00 Have you got a "reset" button? Otherwise, check the manual and look for a pair of jumper pins where a button could be connected. Short the pins. Graham L (2)
206238 2004-01-09 04:18:00 Hi Graham, just wanting to know what you mean by "reset"? If you mean clearing the cmos back to it's factory settings, I have done that several times and it doesn't seem to be working at all.

I really want to fix this, it's a good mobo and has served me well and was running well, it hasn't been moved around much at all, so I'm quite perplexed to say the least!!! :(

206239 2004-01-09 04:24:00 Reset as in reset, nothing to do with the CMOS .

Many cases have a reset button on the front beside the power button .

There are pins on the motherboard for connecting the button, if the button is fitted .

If there is no button, the pins will still be on the motherboard .

If the Power_Good line from the PSU isn't being correctly recognised the CPU will not boot, just sit and sulk instead .

A reset will often force it to POST though .

206240 2004-01-09 04:28:00 The reset button is connected and working properly, if I press it the case lights go on, obviously I cannot tell if it is actually reseting the machine, will try to switch the connectors around but I've been through the mobo manual several times and I am pretty sure the connectors are all working properly and connected correctly.

I think if it got past POST and into windows so he could load the drivers he would be happy.....can't load them if it doesn't even make the BIOS, let alone Windows or DOS.

OK, reset sounds like its resetting if the case lights flick.
What is running? Assume fans and thats it?

206244 2004-01-09 08:45:00 What's running.....

PSU fan , CPU (which I've tested in another machine) and it's fan are all ok, nothing out of the ordinary, no sign of or smell of burning on any mobo components, has a single stick of PC133 SD RAM (which I know works)---> comes out of a machine that is currently running fine, and was previously on the SDR mobo.

I may just spend the week-end swapping hardware and see if I pick up on the problem.

Thanks for the suggestions guys... keep them coming... I need allthe help I can get here.

cheers

206245 2004-01-09 23:32:00 Assuming you put the MB in another case, make sure that mounting pillars are not shorting anything. Caught me out once, until I put insulating washers on the screws. Have fun.
Bye
