206352 2004-01-13 03:03:00 Odd.

The size is actually read from the CD. There's a block of data supplied by the manufacturer, with all the characteristics (laser power needed for writing, etc). If that can't be read, I'd expect the software to complain bitterly, not reduce the size. :D

206353 2004-01-14 08:12:00 I am not a computer guru.
I simply tell it as I see it.
I put the 700mb blank disk in my cdrw and it says in the properties 648mb.
I put the same (physically) disk in my wifes computer and it says 702.

I realise that the CDRW might be going belly up, but it is extremely unlikely that the one I tried as an alternative, just happened to do the same when it was in my PC.

This must be frustrating to you guys who know about these things, but imagine how frustrating it is for me.

206354 2004-01-14 08:17:00 Have you tried the latest version of Nero? I firmly believe the problems you are having are due to you using an older burning program.

Lo.

206355 2004-01-14 20:48:00 have you tried a different disk brand? try a wekk known brand like sony or verbatim Megaman (344)
206356 2004-01-14 23:59:00 I hope you did the firmware upgrade on the correct model. I did a firmware upgrade a while ago to enable my CDRW to use 99min CD's and there were all sorts of warnings about being positive about model # before applying the patch.

I agree with Graham that its strange the size is reducing. Normally it either works properly or not at all. Perhaps upgrade the ASPI drivers (www.adaptec.com) which are needed with ATAPI drives in older OS like Win98.

206357 2004-01-15 03:23:00 I have tried many disc brands including Verbatim DataLifePlus Super Azo.

I have the latest Aspi version on my system.

My version of Nero is 5.5.3.5 which I know isn't a new version, but it did work before, and it doesn't work now. I am reluctant to spend a couple of hours downloading the latest version when I have also tried software with built in writing such as ProShow Gold. It will happily write to an old 650mb CDRW, but will not write to any 700mb media of any make I have tried.

I realise that the firmware upgrade is critical, but I am satisfied I did it correctly, (model number off the unit), and it did work fine. I did this before my hard drive crash, and it still shows up as correct.

Nero CD Speed detects the correct length of 79:59:41 or something like that for the 80minute CDRs, but they will not allow writing to them.

206358 2004-01-16 06:42:00 I tell lies. I tried a later version of Nero and the fail indicates
" ATAPI CD-R/RW 6x4x30 COULD NOT PERFORM FIXATION"

206359 2004-01-16 07:07:00 If DMA is enabled on the IDE port for that drive, change it to PIO and try again.

Or, if PIO is enabled, change it to DMA.

I think the first scenario may have the best chance however.

206360 2004-01-16 07:32:00 I had a look on Google for fixation error and there were a few hits but I didnt really find anything conclusive. I note that this can sometimes occur if your CDRW isnt compatible with Nero and on looking at this page (www.nero.com) I cant see a CDRW matching your specs so it may not be supported.

If you cant find your model there then you may have to flag away Nero as an option and try other burning software.

You mentioned that you were using ProShow Gold. You would have to check that your CDRW is supported because a friend couldnt use the burning software with that because of compatibility so you may strike the same problem.

Btw, if you can actually burn something using CDCreator then a 650MB disk may be enough because an S/VCD can hold more data - up to 735MB according to this article (www.dvdrhelp.com). Obviously doesnt solve the 700MB issue for other types of data though.

206361 2004-01-16 22:43:00 Checked with Nero, my DD6430A-058 is, and has been comaptable sine version 4.

Following on from that, I have sent Nero logs of success and failure to Mitsubishi in Aus to see if they can suggest anything, despite the problem being apparent with another brand of writer.
