You need to make a rule for avginet.exe to port 80 remote any local and TCP/IP.

206298 2004-01-10 02:18:00 AVG gets my support for Virus Protection

Used to use Kerio as a firewall but it didn't like my home network... ZoneAlarm does the job now :)

206299 2004-01-10 07:37:00 *yawn* how many times must this topic be threshed out.

1. Use the search

2. Chances are you don't "need" a firewall - a lot of experience tells me that if you can't find a firewall yourself, can't say why you need it and what it does in 20 words or less you probably shouldn't have one. Usually more trouble than they are worth.

206300 2004-01-11 05:05:00 Just reading February issue of Net Guide and they tested nine internet security products.
One of these was AVG Free Edition and their comments were
Pros: Its free
Cons: It doesn't work well.
They said the main problem was it didnt work well in their tests. Even with the latest anti-virus updates installed, four of the test viruses were able to get through AVG, and only two were picked when activated. The other two viruses infected the system - which they say was just not good enough, even for a free anti-virus program.

Not a very good report I am afraid. Thank heaven I have Nortons. :D

There's a valid reason to dispute the findings, right there!

lol , sorry couldn't resist.

206302 2004-01-11 05:15:00 Any mention of avast! antivirus in that test?

I tried AVG a while ago, but I didn't like the interface at all, so fished out avast!, which does a good job for me. I don't know about AVG, but avast! can also be used for on-access virus protection of the more popular IM and P2P clients.

206303 2004-01-11 05:26:00 I use Kerio as firewall and AVG. They both seem to work fine for me. I haven't had to turn off Kerio to get the AVG updates. ( yet ) :-)

I have used Norton Antivirus and also Norton Internet Security as late as the 2003 versions and they both gave me troubles I can do without.

206304 2004-01-11 06:48:00 Sorry agent there is no reference of Avast. They tested Avg; and one called Vet Anti virus and nothing else in the tests on anti virus software.

They also covered Internet Security software, Firewall software, and Anti-spam software.

206305 2004-01-12 02:29:00 the best free firewalls are linux based. The easiest you'll find being Smoothwall Express (www.smoothwall.org)

Put together a small computer out of spare parts you may have lying around or can pick up from relatives for free or cheap, or even buy secondhand gear cheaply from stores or trademe, install smoothwall, configure it and voila.. you've got a functional internet firewall and gateway router all going within half an hour to an hour... AND it's far more secure than "software firewalls"

If you want to get a little more advanced then look at freesco or LRP. If you want to waste resources with a lot of overhead, then look at a full linux/bsd distro with IPtables
