206612 2004-01-11 00:42:00 I've got an IBM Thinkpad A21 that runs Win98SE without any significant stability/usability problems.
It has a 600mhz PIII Celeron with 128mb RAM.
Question: in light of the upcoming dropping of support for Win98 by MS, should I be thinking about changing the OS? I run XP home on my desktop machines, and that is what I would be changing to.
My own thought is
(a) if it ain't broke don't fix it, and
(b) 128 mb ram looks a little tight for Win XP.

Comments?

if you can double that or better then upgrade but if you cant keep 98

206614 2004-01-11 00:59:00 I run XP on a 600 Celeron.
It runs fine with 256 MB RAM

I used to run it on 128 (less with the video RAM shared) and it ran. Actually its better to describe it as "walked", not ran.

It was very stable and still useable though.

I also ran a laptop 600 MHZ Celeron, 192 MB RAM and it was fine.

If you can squeeze a bit more RAM into it, then go for it.

206615 2004-01-11 01:13:00 Thanks guys - you've pretty well confirmed my own opinion. It is not a high priority thing for mne, but if I can get some more RAM I may well change. tbacon_nz (865)
206616 2004-01-11 20:10:00 why bother to change if it does all that you want it to , try to image it as is with Ghost or drive Image then you wont ever need to do any updates etc if you ever have any major problems with it. kiwibeat (304)

I agree. My 98SE does everything needed, doesn't crash ( never had BSOD) and I am not convinced that XP has benefits for many of us. We Luddites must stick together .....

206620 2004-01-11 22:36:00 GF. You have either got a whole lot of time on your hands or a REALLY twisted sense of humour!

How on earth did you come up with that link?

206621 2004-01-11 23:16:00 I'm not convinced I have to change either (see original post), but I still think XP is a better OS than 98Se - on my desktop machines anyway... tbacon_nz (865)
