| 206342 | 2004-01-09 08:52:00 | I have a PIII 550 running Windows 98SE. I had a hard drive crash a short time ago which required a new install. I have since used my CD writer quite successfully using 700MB cdr and cdrws. Now for some reason my system will only work with 650MB cdrs and cdrws. If I put in a blank 700MB disc, in the properties it shows it as 648MB not 702 which shows on another machine with the same disc. I have tried alternative software such as Nero, but still no success. I normally use Easy Cd Creator 3.5c and Adaptec Direct CD. A 700MB disc formatted previously for Direct CD works fine, but I am unable to format another 700MB disc. I have also tried another CD writer (hardware) with the same result. | nolanz (3148) | ||

Easy CD creator 3.5 is very old. Also, please advise what writer you are using, and whether it is internal or external, etc. Lo. |

Ive never had to use Drivers, even in Win95 when I tried throwing a 4x4x8 speed CD-R/W in a 133Mhz Box. It burnt at 1x fine. I was under the impression that Windows used scsi emulation for CD-R/W writing? Perhaps Im wrong, or on totally the wrong path? |

| 206347 | 2004-01-12 06:21:00 | I realize that the software is old, but it worked before, reluctantly I tried a new version of Nero, but that didn't, work either. I was hoping somebody had experienced this before. I, with my limited knowledge, suspect it is something in my system which has caused the problem, but I cannot find anything which looks like it might remedy the problem. If anybody has any ideas at all, please suggest them. Like so many people, I would not like to try and locate 650mb discs. |

| 206348 | 2004-01-12 06:41:00 | As Lo. said, post your CD-R/W specs. Could be that its getting old and dying? |

| 206349 | 2004-01-13 00:02:00 | As I said in the first request for assistance, I have replaced the CD writer (hardware) with a newer CD writer ( this read 700mb cds on another machine), but the effect was the same. However my Writer is a Diamond Data (Atapi) 30x6x4 to which I have updated the firmware. I have also tried to update the driver with Microsoft, but I was advised that the existing driver was the best. |

| 206350 | 2004-01-13 00:11:00 | What version of Nero? It is now up to 6.3.0.2. Lo. |

| 206351 | 2004-01-13 02:56:00 | 6x4x30 is by no means the latest or greatest, and so far my suspicions are that its a dying Laser. Same happened with my Creative 8x4x24 CD-R/W. Started off reading/writing to 700mb cd's. Next it could read but not write to 700's.. Then a month later it couldnt read 700's... then it would only write to the Kodak Gold + Silver Ultima CD's and read those/normal CD's... Then it just packed up altogether and I moved on.... I cant think of anything else, perhaps somebody else will have a bright idea though. |
