206949 2004-01-12 08:19:00 my modem refuses to make a good connection to the internet. it randomly dissconnects and half the time refuses to connect. if anyone can help, that would be nice. thanks. agent_24 (4330)
206950 2004-01-12 22:25:00 What brand & model of modem are you using? Are you in a town environment or rural? Do you have any other devices plugged into the same line you use to connect? Does your modem connect using a double adapter? Do you have call waiting? Have you had telecom do a line test (not that it makes much difference in my experience)? Which ISP do you connect with? Would really help if you could answer these questions otherwise its pretty hard to narrow it down. demonmors (1299)
206951 2004-01-12 22:57:00 my modem is an Intel HaM data fax voice modem - model: MD5530 im in a town, and i have just a telephone connected using a double adaptor i. i dont think i have call waiting - no i havent had a line test, and i use XTRA for my ISP. agent_24 (4330)
206952 2004-01-12 23:25:00 Try disconnecting all phones in the house before you connect.

Are you using an extension lead on your phone line.

Have you sky digital installed.

206953 2004-01-13 00:13:00 i have tried dissconnecting everything apart from modem - makes no difference. i have to use an extension becasue its not convenient to have the computer in the kitchen, which is where the main phone socket is. and no, i dont have sky digital, or any sky. agent_24 (4330)
206954 2004-01-13 02:06:00 Isolate any problem with the extension by connecting direct to the main jack in the kitchen.
If the extension is not causing the problem do the following.

Try slowing your modem connect speed by the following.

For Win 95 98 ME
Double-click on My Computer, then double-click on Dial-Up Networking.
Right-click on your ISP icon and choose Properties.
Click the Configure button.
Change maximum speed to 38.400
Click the Connection tab.
Click the Advanced button.
In "Extra settings," enter the string. +MS=V34
Click OK to save changes.
Shut down the computer and turn it back
on to activate the changes.

For Win XP
Start/ Control panels/ phone and modems
Click on Modem tab and then Properties
Click on Modem tab and change Max port speed to 38400
Click on Advanced
In the Extra initialization commands box enter +MS=V34
Click OK and OK again

206955 2004-01-13 02:38:00 If you have to use an extension, it would be a good idea to make an extension using twisted pair cable. The flat cable is made to work with voice. Graham L (2)
