206681 2004-01-11 07:15:00 Hi people,
Was running win ME,15 gig HDD, 191 ram
My boy gave me a no so kosher copy of Partition magic 7.0 and Windows XP Pro. :8}
Now I know I shouln't use it them but hey the price and such. No flames please.

I was dual booting linux and windows ME as much as I like Linux Im getting to long in the tooth for it and for about a year been unable to find drivers for a scanner and external cd writer. So thought I would give win xp pro a go and put linux on an older second machine in the near future.

I opened Part Magic and deleted the linux partition and the ext2 partition, thought all was kosher and upon rebooting the machine the linux dual boot was still there. (But linux is not there the the boot part.)
Also when I installed XP Pro I ugraded over WinME which was a big mistake cause it looks like some WinME stuff came over to XP.
I also had to upgrade most of my drivers, just got the modem working again. And for most reason XP dont like CD Creator software, and can't find drivers, but have been told XP has its own software for writing to CD's but until get XP working properly that don't work.

So my idea is to format the HDD but as the CD Writer is not working under XP I can not backup a lot of my personal files and data.
So now the idea is to install another copy of XP on the old Linux partition if possible and when/if that works ok then format the main C: part of the HDD. If this makes sense.

Cheers merlin-nz ;-)

To solve your other software incompatibility issues, reinstall your legal Window ME operating system.

206683 2004-01-11 07:48:00 The Linux boot loader is in the master boot record (MBR) not on a partition. So if you go ahead and reinstall WinXP. The install will sense the existing partitions which you can delete if you wish. JohnD (509)
