2004-01-11 06:09:00 | I have tried over the past month to understand Zone Alarm and the settings. Generally I have not allowed Net access for applications as I cannot figure out what they are. I have used Google sometimes and the Zone Alarm site but am still very confused about most applications - even the Google info can be too technical to understand eg: svchost.exe So what is a chap to do? There must be somewhere that application names are explained simply and advice given. After all, firewalls are common enough. Help please. Cheers Winston001

2004-01-11 06:28:00 | Hi ya W001, i have zonealarm too, and have asked many a question about it on pf1 and also have found a vast ammount of info by doing a search on pf1 with the key words. so if and when you have time on your side, and a urge to read, i recommend this effort is worth while. i find the best thing is too read as much as possible about them and then ask further questions of people on pf1 if needed..... i have had book marked pages in the past but may have lost them in the recent reformat of my puter. but if i find any ill pass them on. sometimes you can hear or see something over and over again but are not always able to understand it, asking helps sort it at times, while at others you just becoe more confused, take time dont rush it, mull things over and then hit it with the hammer....... :D beetle

2004-01-11 07:06:00 | My method is to restrict net or lan access for those programs I don't recognise, don't tick the "remember the answer ..." box, and if something doesn't run as a result of this or the alert repeatedly comes up I then allow it. Most applications I see trying to access the net are auto-updaters for the likes of yahoo messenger, musicmatch etc, which generally reminds me to go into their settings and disable that aspect of the program. The other mysterious program names are generally legit - and after a while once your prefs are set you never hear from them again. J :D

I did a search of Pf1 (for the last two years 2003-2004) have a look here (pressf1.pcworld.co.nz)to what I have found about svchost.exe. Hope this helps :) |

2004-01-11 07:33:00 | Thanks all, for the thoughts. I had another look at some of the applications which try to connect and most are Microsoft. Running Windows XP Professional. I suppose it is silly to block these since I use Windows anyway. Really I am curious why so many aspects of Windows want to access the Net. Also why should 3D Pinball (only played it once) want access? Cheers Winston01

2004-01-11 07:54:00 | hi ya had a thought, how many things / progs do have showing up on your prog list in ZA? i have...... 15. one is ZA client. mailwasher OE IE adaware spybot AVG yahoo pops Trillian spooler subsystem (printer) mouse drivers (optical) windows updates windows explorer. and these ones i have difficulty with knowing what they do.... (windows crap) Generic host. Application layer im presuming also windows media player could ask ( i dont use often enough i guess) and possible other things on my puter may ask when i use the prog, i also disabilled alerts unless progs, just have a log i check regularly, i struggle to work out on the logs whether it is someones IP addy i should no or not..... but everything is blocked i am not sharing a network or anything so see no reason for letting anything in, i havent ok'd. and i have no idea about games wanting access, to update or upgrade the game possibly. good luck beetle
