2004-01-11 02:13:00 | Hi guys, I am having trouble finding firewall and antivirus software to run on my pc. I was running NAV 2002 and have installed a ADSL modem so required a firewall. The firewall supplied was Zone alarm. I then updated my NAV software via the net (live updates) and my PC started to hang and crash. Several discussions with Symantec help desk suggested upgrading to a package such as NIS2004, which I did after removing all the old software packages. The problem was this new software slowed my PC down to rediculously slow, 15 mins from switching on until all systems are go. Not to mention the hangups and system crashes. Do you have any advise as to how I can fix my dilema. I am running a 1000Mhz pc with Win98SE and 512Mb of ram, the specs for the software (NIS2004) are well within this. IS NIS2004 not suited to my PC or is there possibly something else wrong here. I currently have no antivirus and feel nervous - Help. Heath Davis

Spyware can often slow down computers, cause them to crash etc. Otherwise a slightly more extreme step to take would be to reformat your PC and see if it still crashes, but leave this as the last-resort after trying other suggestions first. |

2004-01-11 02:32:00 | You could temporarily try AVG (www.grisoft.com) or avast! (http:). Both have free and decent alternatives to the mainstream commercial offerings of Symantec and McAfee, and both also offer commerical versions of their own packages. | agent (30) | |
2004-01-11 03:14:00 | I use NOD32 and have Zone Alarm as firewall.The best thing I ever did was dump Nortons. | dumdum (4965) | |
2004-01-11 04:31:00 | Does your computer boot normally with only the Firewall enabled? Look under Options in NIS and remove the tick from beside Nortons Antivirus to load at startup. Try rebooting the machine and see whether this helps - remember to re-enable the Nortons Antivirus once the computer is up and running. Also, try it around the other way, with the Firewall disabled from loading during startup. Hopefully this will pin-point which of the two programs are causing the clash. Did you remove all traces of ZoneAlarm when you uninstalled it? Take a look under Start > Run - enter in msconfig and click OK. Look under the Startup Tab for any mention of ZoneAlarm. Remove the tick from beside it if you find any. See if this helps.

2004-01-11 21:42:00 | To add to the above . Two firewalls and 2 AV programs are likely to conflicts (expecially AV) . If one or the other did not uninstall completely then, as above, that may be the cause of your problems . Is there a lot of disc activity? You may need to reinstall then uninstall again to clean it out if the first attempt failed or use a 3rd party uninstall utility (find a free or trial on the net) . Is a scan enabled or auto-update checking at startup? Disable them if they/it is, if that helps enable them one at a time to eliminate the culprit . Look at the options/preferences for both NAV and the firewall to disable start up options, etc . Are you getting error messages with the crashes and if so what are they? Have you tried Ctrl + Alt + Del when it hangs to check what program is not responding? Cheers Murray P
