206742 2004-01-11 23:37:00 But an Athlon XP 2400+ runs at less than 2GHz in reality.

And seeing as they are only called XP xx00+ because they are optimised to effectively run at that speed under Windows XP, that doesn't exactly attract my attention.

The AMD FX-51 beat the P4 3.2GHz EE, and so did the Athlon 64, in a UT2K3 test and Comanche 4, in PCPP Dec. But the P4 3.2GHz EE beat both in 3DMark03 and Jedi Knight 2.

Make your own mind up, but I would personally prefer Intel over AMD. Yes, AMD's low prices are attractive, but they are known to run hotter, and the 2.4C and 2.6C Intel P4's look very attractive in terms of overclocking.

206743 2004-01-11 23:56:00 I'm going to give up. I agree with what Agent has said and think this discussion isn't really breaking into any new territory.

Lo.

Why don't you check prices before you go shooting off your mouth.
If you look around you will find you can buy a P4 3.0 for about $75 more than an Athlon XP 3000+.

People seem to be getting a bit hung up on the "AMD runs hotter than P4" thing. Yes this is the case, but it's not actually an issue unless you plan on having the case sitting in your lap. AMD chips have a much greater tolerance for heat (up to 85 degrees from memory) than the P4, and unlike P4 don't ramp down their speed as they increase in heat. You are only going to have problems if you don't have cooling adequate to keep the other components in the case cool, since many of these don't tolerate the heat as well.

The trouble with trying to compare AMD and Intel is that there is so much brand loyalty. People get it stuck in their minds that one is better than the other, but in reality if you sit users won't notice any difference when they are using the machine in it's performance. Much like the performance reviews that are done in magazines, have you ever actually thought what that "huge 10% margin" in performance equates to when you are using Word, the Internet, or even most games?

And the overclocking argument needs to be taken with a grain of salt. Since the ability to overcook a chip is dependant on what batch the CPU came from, especially with P4 e.g. which can increase the supply of 2.4GHz chips from the 3GHz line (Since there is a much greater demand from the mid-range chips). It seems to be more of a status thing than actually something which users will be awareof when they are using the system, without showing the FPS...

206746 2004-01-12 01:15:00 Overclock ability - I've to to say Intel, ease of overclock and greater range. Pump up the FSB and you can still use the stock HSF, what more could you asked for? As for range ... there is no comparision here.

My celeron 2.4 is running at 3.2 and my 2.6C is now at 3.52 ... and that's actual MHz increase, not some XP rating increase.

Each has it's Pros and Cons. Neither of them is perfect. It's like comparing EVOs, WRXs against HSV Clubsport, XR8 ... etc.

206747 2004-01-12 21:33:00 Whoooooweeeee! I should of know what I was in for when I started this thread! 8^| Anyway...... Thanks for all the info and that, I think I will go for a P4 2.8 Ghz though... Madcat (5098)
206748 2004-01-12 21:52:00 make sure you call back next week when we have the sequel.

Intel vs AMD-The mobil cpu's

Then it should be a round of ati vs Nvidia

Then after a debate over whether we agree/disagree with MS snooping it will be time to bash telecom somemore.

By then the next edition of PC World should be out and someone can whinge about the content.

Then a bit more telecom bashing.

Which will bring us right back to the start and we can have the AMD vs Intel debate once again.

206749 2004-01-12 21:57:00 Whoops.

Forgot a couple things.

During that time

At least

3 threads will be made about the time on PressF1 being out of whack

1 thread will be made about the speed of the forum.

A couple of the "old-timers" will hijack a thread and steer it in the direction of aeroplanes, valves, and or writing quills.

The "whats wrong with my fridge" thread willbe revived at least once.
