Hate to change the thread's direction here, but since messenger 6.1 I haven't been able to transfer files or use audio. Both my PC's are XP Pro, and it's the same on both. My mum's PC is win98 and she can use audio with her other win98 firends, but it doesn't connect with any XP machines. Firewalls and so on have all been disabled whilst testing it.

Did msn boob with 6.1?

try windows messenger on the xp machines

mcrosoft isnt dumb enough to cause conflicts between its own software

windows messenger and msn messenger do talk without worries

206696 2004-01-11 10:22:00 Isn't the problem with the XP firewall that it doesn't detect outgoing calls?

And Beetle - I also note the lack of Tom's quick wit. No idea but imagine he is enjoying a holiday far from computers.

yes the major downfall of XP firewall is you cannot detect or stop outgoing problems, it only stops incoming. most people have differennt opinions on this, but i prefer an actual prog like ZA that tells when what and how etc of the inns and outs of the system, what should and should not be having access etc.

a lot comes down to trial and era, and patience, - meaning dont expect to know what each prog is instantly.

stick with ZA W001, as it is a good program. and does a very good job, just what a lot of people need, and is fairly noob drivable.

Many programs will appear to need net access due to the fact that they will make use of a processes, such as svchost, even though they do not need it.

Zone alarm is process aware so it will see pinball going to use svchost, to load a dll for instance, and will alert you that the program is attempting to access the net because other processes have used svchost to access the net.

I hope this makes some sense?

Win XP really makes the idea of restricting access by program / process very tricky due to insistence on using the likes of svchost for network level operations.

206699 2004-01-12 04:34:00 Windows media player and other bits of XP are regarded by ZA as ok, being part of the OS, and Svchost.exe is thus OK. Most people only wish to have their browser,Email, and newsgroup progs going out, so tell everything else to cease unnless you want it to go.

See PCWNZ for Apr 03 p 99 for a URL which shows to to set up the blocking mechanism for XP bits. It looks a bit complex...

206700 2004-01-12 05:06:00 Hi Winston

You can find out what program is wanting access by either using ZA's built-in advisory service, searching the net, or searching your own computer for the file name then seeing what program directory it hides in .

Say no to any request you are not sure of and see if any adverse effects occur, like the current operation not proceeding as planned for lack of a file or data .

IMHO you can safely say yes to your AV program, Adaware, SpyBot and most commercial programs (including gasp, shock, horror, Microsoft's offerings) and after a short while you will almost never get a request because the legit communications are all logged . I view most ZA pop-ups with suspicion now, unless I recognise the file or program and it is relevant to my activities of the moment .

Cheers
