207157 2004-01-13 20:28:00 Last evening I decided to update my OS as well as Office Suite. Not being an expert on computers, I downloaded everything that was available. At one stage I was asked to load my office cd which I did.
When I finished downloading, I restarted my computer and then checked my e-mail. When I did that the screen came up with a box where I had to fill in my name etc and CD product key. I did this but it refused my product key (on back of jewel case). Now I can't even use word etc because it wants the numbers. I have reinstalled office but no luck. Spend all night working on it. Please help.
I use a PC computer with windows xp home ed. Office xp Professional.

207158 2004-01-13 20:35:00 That sounds very strange. Although I haven't had any experience in updating OfficeXP, i would suspect that such a thing shouldn't happen. Have you kept your computer up to date with antivirus definitions etc?

As far as I know, Microsoft does not "force" you to give them your name etc. They usually just want the CD Key to 'activate' the program at first install, and that's it.

207159 2004-01-13 21:06:00 Yes I have kept my anti-virus up to date (weekly). I suspect that I may have loaded a file that requires this key. Troble is I don't know where to look to find it.

Like you said Microsoft did not force me for my name but is asking for the key to activate the software. I have the key on the back of my Office jewel case but microsoft is not accepting it.

I am going abroad tomorrow and my link to home is my email. Now I'm buggered. Any other ideas?

207160 2004-01-13 21:13:00 Are you able to uninstall the updates (to both Windows and Office) from the Add/Remove Programs Applet in Control Panel?

If this does not work, you'll probably have to create a web-based email with a provider such as Hotmail, Yahoo, or Mail.com (many others available), so that at least in the short term you can communicate with home.

207161 2004-01-13 21:28:00 This may be a silly question, but have you tried your old product key? (You said you upgraded office?)

Also, you may have to contact microsoft about this, because someone sold you something tht didnt work. Hell, I'd get pretty angry. But as I had problems with my Windows CD key, i learned of places that you can call to get a new one, just explain your situation. I know thisis only a long term result, but i figured that you could do so when you get back.

207162 2004-01-13 21:41:00 I bought this PC in March 2003 and it came with Works Suite. I bought Office XP separately and have been using it ever since - until last night of cause. So I am not sure about the old product key but I'll try it thanks. Confused Man (5108)
207163 2004-01-13 21:41:00 They didn't Upgrade it, they just downloaded the latest updates/patches through Windows Update (well that's how I interpreted the post). somebody (208)
