207147 2004-01-13 14:00:00 Hi all.

I've been having on-going problem with adsl in my house for the last couple of months. It would randomly disconnect itself after some time. The disconnection dialogue would pop up, and the modem would go back into negotiation phase, then establish the link again. (Sometimes it can stay connected for hours, sometimes 5minutes).

I've had my ALH110 dynalink internal modem checked by their technician, and no problem was found, I've also had a Telecom technician over, and he couldn't find any fault either.

The problem seem to have gone away in the month of December, but now it has came back, and I can not seem to stay online for no more than an hour in the day time (usually no problem at night time).

Another strange symptom of the problem is that once I was automatically disconnected, I can not try to connect right away (It would come up with the "Your computer could not connect to the network message"), but after that I could reconnect again on the 2nd try.

I've also managed to borrow a friend's Dynalink external modem, tried it and it's exactly the same problem.

I've also tried several other methods repeatedly such as reinstalling the card driver, putting on a different PCI slot, reinstalling dial-up networking, and reinstalling windows, and making sure there are no other electronic devices near the computer. But none of the solution seem to help.

I called Xtra jetstream helpdesk again earlier today, and the operator seem to think I should try different types of modems to test their noise level durability, or try to borrow an adsl router. He also think it maybe an issue with the local exchange being congested since my connection problem usually occurs at day time.

I am in the Auckland, North Shore Browns Bay area, does anyone have experience in this sort of thing ? and would upgrading to a router help if the problem is due to local exchange congestion ? I can not get hold of an adsl router, so it looks like I may have to purchase one if I just want to test that option out.

Thanks for any help.

problem with Phonelines/connections? Faxes, Answeringmachines?
Software/Drivers, DHCP Lease problems?

207149 2004-01-14 00:39:00 Hi, thanks for the reply.

At one stage I did try unplugging every single device from other phone sockets in the house. I've also reinstalled windows clean. A telecom technician did came over to check the line but found no fault with it.

If the problem is with DHCP lease that means I can not do anything about it at my end right ?

I've pretty much looked around some other boards and resources for information, tried a lot of things, but not having much luck. Does anyone know if an adsl router might help with congestion problem at the local exchange or line noise ?

Thanks a lot.

207150 2004-01-14 00:51:00 Congestion at the local exchange should not affect your adsl link . It is always on and dedicated to your line so traffic on other lines shouldn't affect it . Just like some modems are more noise tolerant than others, your modem brand may be susceptible so perhaps a router might help .

I don't really see why a router would be any different but using a NAT router does confer other advantages such as better isolation from nasties and the ability to use multiple PCs on the net simultaneously (if you add a switch or hub) .

Is your home phone wiring a two wire or three wire system? Two wire outlets have a 2 embossed on the front and Telecom's specs for ADSL would only guarantee performance to specification on two wire connections .

My router connection occasionally goes dead on my W98 box and a reboot fixes it . I have no idea why it happends but the cure is simple so I don't ask .

207151 2004-01-14 00:51:00 Does it disconnect when it is raining by anychance. I had a similar propblem at another house, during dry weather my connection was great but when it rained I lost it constantly. Eventually I was able to get telecom to check the box that contatined the undergound cables and he saw it was full of water and the water proofing had failed on the cables.

Also if you are using line filters, try using a different on maybe your filter is playing up. All kinds of things can interefer with your adsl such ad cramped, bent or squashed wiring to the outside copper wire being corroded as my was at my current home. It might even simply be the phone cable from your dsl modem so change the cable and see if that helps.

Routers are usually the prefered option for dsl as the have a built in signal booster which can help considerably over connections that are less than perfect or further away from the exchange, however this may not solve your problem if there is line noise on your line.

Get telecom to do a line test the very next time you actually get disconnected, if they discover it then they have to try and fix it for you.

207152 2004-01-14 02:21:00 the same thing has been happening to my 56k dial-up modem agent_24 (4330)
207153 2004-01-14 03:57:00 You can also use Telecom's line check Here (jetstream.xtra.co.nz) to test the speed capacity of your line. Select the "Is Jetstream available at my place?" option.

Do this in varying weathers or at varying times when performance seems ok and again when it is bad. I'd set up a shortcut to save time. It works OK on jetstream though most people would access via dial up for obvious reasons. My own test results are below:

Line 1
Estimated Xtra Xtra JetStream downstream access line speed limits:
Lower probable limit: 3.4 Mbits per second
Upper probable limit: 7.4 Mbits per second

Line 2
Estimated Xtra Xtra JetStream downstream access line speed limits:
Lower probable limit: 3.4 Mbits per second
Upper probable limit: 7.4 Mbits per second

I am close to my exchange <2.5km

207154 2004-01-14 05:18:00 agent_24, i suggest you get a new modem. as for the adsl....

I too often get disconnections. These are also too often when i need them most.

I dont know the problem, but my friend who has a lower line speed hardly has them.

Apparently, my problem is because of my isp. They, at their exchange, do not cater enough bandwidth for the high level of users they have in my area. This is reassured because in peak times, this problem is worse.

Though if you disconnect every five minutes, then i'd suspect the connection on your end, (i.e, the modem, or the phone cable) more than the isp's.
