2004-01-13 05:23:00 | Got problems on line with Messenger continually trying to connect out to various IP's since installing Norton 2004 antivirus but being blocked by ZoneAlarm firewall. Using cello.cs.uiuc.edu have found Messenger is mainly trying to connect to terminator or dialup.xtra.co.nz On Aug13, 2003 11:35 realestate had similar problem, be interested to hear her/his final result. Have read FAQ 46 and associated messages. Briefly Norton2004,Adaware and Spybot give clean bill of health. Have not signed in for Messenger, although v4.7 is installed msconfig /Services has Messenger unticked. C:\Windows\inf\sysoc.inf Messenger reads msmsgs=msgrocm.dll,OcEntry,msmsgs.inf,7 ie no Hide Add/Remove Progs does NOT list Messenger Windows Messenger Services Run | services.msc /s set to Service Stopped, Startup Type Manual. Have query out with Symatec and ZoneAlarm Any comments would be appreciated Currently getting frequent hour glass flicks whilst on line, checking ZoneAlarm log can show up to 600 attempts Current mood is to remove Messenger but before doing so want to find out why and is it needed by some other programme for ? updating.

2004-01-13 07:21:00 | Ok first of all Messenger and Windows Messenger are not the same program - Messenger is a service that can be used for netsend and alerter messages over a network, Windows Messenger is a Instant Messenger program used to chat with friends/family etc over the internet. First of all change Messenger under Services to Startup type: disabled, service status: stopped. You can access this by going via Control Panel > Admin tools > Services. Look for Messenger and right-click on it for Properties. To disable Windows Messenger from loading you will need to check out a few areas: 1. Outlook Express: Tools > Options > General. Remove tick from beside "Automatically log on to Windows Messenger" 2. Nortons Antivirus: Options > Antivirus > Internet (Instant Messenger). Remove all ticks beside what Instant messengers to protect. [note: having these program selected make Nortons keep loading the Windows Messenger even though you have selected it not to load via the other options] 3. In Windows Messenger, look for an option to stop it from loading on startup. I think it will the Windows Messenger that is causing the firewall alerts as it tries to connect to the internet. See if all of this helps. :) Jen

2004-01-14 06:49:00 | Thank you Jen for suggestions, one of them appears to have solved the problem ZoneAlarm only stated Messenger was trying to connect, was aware there are two programmes, Messenger and Windows Messenger, but there was no indication which was the problem maker. Messenger under Services was set to Manual and Stopped, have changed Manual to Disabled Outlook Express, removed tick from "Automatically log on to Windows Messenger". Send/Receive Messages | Send /Receive Messages at startup" was already unticked. Nortons Antivirus , unticked "Windows Messenger (recommended)" Windows Messenger/Connection/Preferences advised "You are currently NOT connected to .NET Messenger Service As this problem started after the upgrade to Norton 2004, suspect unticking "Windows Messenger" was the cure.

2004-01-14 09:43:00 | Jen, thought you might be interested, tried some reverse engineering. Changed Messenger Services back to Manual, no problem Changed Outlook Express back to "Automatically log onto Windows Messenger" problem back although Norton Windows Messenger was unticked. Have changed Messenger Services and Outlook Express back to the no problem status. Just odd that problem did'nt occur before Norton was upgraded with Windows Messenger ticked.

2004-01-14 09:55:00 | That is strange. I know I had disabled Windows Messenger from loading and yet I could find it running in the background each time I was on the internet. Mine was due to Nortons Antivirus automatically starting the program since it was selected to monitor that program. Removing the protection option within Norton solved that puzzle and issue for me. At least you have got it back under control now :D You mentioned earlier that you couldn't find Windows Messenger in Add/Remove. It can be removed but MS doesn't make it easy. Have a look here (www.dougknox.com) if you still want to remove it from the system.

2004-01-14 10:21:00 | Terminator is Xtra's secondary DNS server, Alien is primary IIRC. Basically it connects to those DNS servers to resolve the IP address of the website/host/whatever (MSN server?) and then connects to the IP address.

2004-01-17 05:26:00 | Have had a reply from Symatec. They referred me to service1.symantec.com Tried their suggestion but directly I reversed the Windows Messenger to manual plus replaced the tick in Outlook Express "Automatically log on to Windows Messenger" the problem was back, so will stick with the original solution. Thanks again.
