207049 2004-01-13 03:21:00 Hi freaks, a few days ago i unpacked some files to my desktop, on of which is called Win16.exe - if I try delete it it says its being used, which its not. The fked thing is that i made a copy, now ive got 'copy of win16' which cant be deleted as well. Its drvin me nuts. Im using WinXP Pro - somebody plse tell me how to kill it. SimonNz (5105)
207050 2004-01-13 03:35:00 Go into safe mode on boot-up.
Keep tapping F8 as the PC boots, you will get a menu.
Choose Safe Mode
Delete the file
Reboot normally

207051 2004-01-13 03:46:00 if you can't delete in safe mode, boot from a XP boot disk. (you can create one by formatting a floppy and choosing create boot disk).

then do it through the command prompt.

207052 2004-01-13 04:04:00 Hi SimonNz,

I would boot into Safe Mode, pressing F8 after the BIOS POST screen and then selecting Safe Mode, I'd then try deleting it although sometimes this does not work because the file or worse, hard drive sector it's on is corrupted.

If you are running WinXP Pro under NTFS then booting from the floppy disk is going to be of no help unless you've got drivers to read NTFS file system.

If you use FAT32 then you are in luck, from the command line

>cd x:\docu*\~username\desktop [enter]
>del win16.exe [enter]

Where x: is the drive it resides on (usually C:) and where ~username is your username for the computer.

If you recall where you got this file from, go back to that site and see if they have had similar problems and a possible fix for it.

Make sure you have an uptodate antivirus program like Norton Antivirus 2004 and scan files you download before use. You may also like to look into a program that can show you which processes are being run so you can kill the process.

booting from an XP boot disk allows you to read NTFS just fine. i've done it.

that's why it's called an XP boot disk.

207054 2004-01-13 06:43:00 Dude, I had the SAME problem.

Mine wouldn't delete even in safe mode. What i ended up doing was booting in safe mode with command prompt.

Used DOS language and basically deleted the file from the command prompt with no problems.

Let me know if you need to know how to do this.

207056 2004-01-13 20:30:00 I learnt the hard way - experimenting with DOS commands on a FAT32 install of Win98SE.

Now you see it, now you don't. I must have killed at least 3 installations of Win98SE in my youth.... lol!

207057 2004-01-13 22:38:00 Hi nadius,

I never knew Windows ME start up disk could read NTFS, which is the XP Boot Disk you are talking about. The formatting of the disk and choosing create bootdisk does just that, it's the same startup disk for Windows ME.

I do believe however the XP Bootdisks, the 6 set of disks or the CDROM has the ability to read the NTFS, because it actually loads the NTFS drivers.

I just did your method and had no way of reading NTFS.

207058 2004-01-14 03:32:00 maybe i'm using the wrong name (could be startup disk..)

but trust me, i had the same problem as this guy, and even safe mode with command prompt wouldn't let me delete the file.

so i did exactly what i wrote initially (on XP pro with NTFS partitions) and it worked just fine.

i'm not at an XP machine right now, but from memory i'm think the floppy doesn't contain things like scandisk et al. thus making it different from the ME bootdisk. i'll check later...
