1354040 2013-09-22 08:33:00 Hi guys,

I am a total newbie to this so please bear with me. I am looking to set up a website for the first time, I consider myself pretty good with computers but for me a lot of it is simply about nutting things out and using the internet to find out answers but I haven't built a website before, basically for me it's all about the research hence here I am. I have a few questions I wondered if you might be able to answer for me please, here goes:

1. Who would you recommend to buy a domain name from and use as a web host (I have looked at crazydomains and talked to them and sound pretty good and affordable) not sure if I want to use their web builder tho as it's quite expensive and I am doing this to try and save money for a friend?

2. I have been reading about Wordpress (in particular Instant Wordpress) and it seems to me that this would be a good easy free website building option, would you agree or should I use something else, free if possible?

3. To clarify, does Instant Wordpress simply mean I can download it, add it to my USB stick and take it to someone else's house and put on their PC so that they could make changes to the website, if for example someone else was going to maintain it once built?

4. If I start to set up a website and it turns out I am a complete muppett and it sucks, can I just shut down the site but keep the domain name? and if so how do I shut it down?

Thanks for any help or tips I really appreciate it :)

1354041 2013-09-22 09:58:00 Wordpress is pretty nice, tonnes of themes available. Same for blogger. I've used webs.com in the past but felt that the site builder is a bit rubbish and everything looks too generic (can't remember if you got access to the html/css with webs.com). I'd recommend Squarespace (www.squarespace.com/), good templates and a really easy to use site builder. $8USD gets you 500GB of bandwidth 2gb of storage, a mobile site and if you pay for 1 full year ($80USD) you get your domain name for free. Also if you decide to go with squarespace use the discount code: teksyndicate9 or roosterteeth9 to get 20% off your first purchase. icow (15313)
1354042 2013-09-22 10:28:00 Basic answers from my own experience.
1. You don't buy domain names - you 'rent' them. You pay an annual fee to register a domain name. I've used a domain registrar based in Chch. It is worthwhile registering with someone who will renew annually on your credit card. That way you don't risk losing the name. If it turns out to be a popular name then others may want to grab it if you don't keep it in your name and fully paid up. Around $30pa for xxx.co.nz. If you PM me (personal message) I can tell you actual details of my domain registrar and my web host (about $60 pa). The host can be any number of companies which have various offerings. You also need to decide between host in NZ, Aust or elsewhere.
2. I have had websites for about 10 years and they are built in html because that's what I learned first. Probably because it was similar to Basic programming language which I was familiar with. HTML is similar to the early word processors (1990s) and there's plenty of free help on the internet. Initially tried some applications for building web pages but could never get exactly the look I wanted.
4. If your efforts come unstuck you can cancel your web host and domain name at or before next renewal. While you still have the site you can delete all the files before you cancel.
As above - please PM me for more detail from my point of view.
Others will have alternative advice and you will have plenty of options on how to do it.

1354043 2013-09-22 10:43:00 Sorry DakotaNZ, I suggested PM but you can't do that until you have 10 posts on the forums. I'll wait patiently until you reach that status!

In the meantime check out this example site http://seniornetbayswater.org.nz

1354044 2013-09-22 20:12:00 3. To clarify, does Instant Wordpress simply mean I can download it, add it to my USB stick and take it to someone else's house and put on their PC so that they could make changes to the website, if for example someone else was going to maintain it once built?

You buy your domain name and then pay yearly to keep it....
This can be from your website host - or not. If the domain is elsewhere you can point it to your website hosts server...

Have a look at Openhost, Wordpress is one of the free apps you can use with their hosting packages...
You can create your site straight from the control panel. Once you do, you set up a username/password to access Wordpress back end - which is how you edit it from then on.

Yes, you can scrap the website, keep the domain only - or scrap the Wordpress and try again with something else if you decide you don't like the frist attempt.

If you want to keep a copy of the wordpress site off the hosts servers, you download all the files and then also download the database.
Openhost on docs on how/what to do or if you ring they will explain it....ask for Tyson, he's the Wordpress guru.
