1331798 2013-03-07 08:41:00 Just a heads up regarding PayPal accounts. I got an email from PP today saying "We apologize for the problem you encountered while attempting to make a PayPal payment with your credit card" with instructions on how to resolve the issue. As I hadn't used my PP account for months, I investigated and found that there was $500 unaccounted for on my credit card, comprising two purchases, with the goods bound for Tunisia.

I called the bank and confirmed there had been two transactions and other unsuccessful attempts to charge goods to my card via PP. I cancelled the card, removed it from my PP account so there is no currently registered card on it, filed PP Disputes for both transactions, and changed my PP password and security questions.

I also emailed the two sellers (both in America) to suggest that they don't post the goods if they haven't already gone. One emailed right back to thank me, and to say that he hasn't sent the goods and won't, and will contact ebay to cancel the transaction. PP emailed back to say that particular dispute has been resolved, and they would refund the money to my credit card. No response on the other one yet.

I will put in a Transaction Dispute form with the bank when the merchants are identified on my CC statement. Neither had been processed by the bank when I called them but by then it is too late anyway - the money has gone.

I am going to cancel my PP account as soon as all of this is resolved.

I just thought youse fullas may want to have a look at your passwords and security questions just in case other little Tunisian turds are attacking your PP accounts as well.

1331799 2013-03-07 08:49:00 No problems there :p they would have to put money in my CC to be of any use LOL

Good warning though - thanks

1331800 2013-03-07 19:17:00 That is good info John. I have Paypal but again I use the dud debit card with no money in until I transfer funds before transactions.

However it shows the fragility of these setups for quick and 'safe' online payments...

1331801 2013-03-07 19:36:00 I must look into debit cards - thanks.

The second merchant replied to my warning email this morning - grateful thanks for the heads up, and he too will not send the goods. PP has also said they have decided in my favour now on this second dispute and will refund the money, so I won't be out of pocket after all.

The most pleasing thing overall is that thanks to my emails to the merchants, the fraudsters will get nothing! And I must say that PP's systems have worked flawlessly within less than 24 hours.

1331802 2013-03-07 19:45:00 I have been into my pp account and changed my pw to a stronger one. No unknown purchases on my account there.

1331804 2013-03-07 20:10:00 Thanks for the heads up John, will get hubby to check his PP account as well. Will be interesting to see if anything has been going on as I am pretty sure he hasn't used it for a while. The credit card registered to it was canceled last year so good luck to them if they try going on a spending spree with it. :devil FoxyMX (5)
1331805 2013-03-07 20:46:00 I made a small online purchase from an Auckland-based (I assumed) company before Xmas, but they used PayPal as the payment method. Got the goods OK - although the receipt were all in Chinese.

Then, just after Xmas I noticed a rather large transaction on my CC: about $3200, with a PayPal origination tag. Looked up my PayPal account and there was a USD2900 transaction originating from Singapore. Needless to say, I disputed the transaction and was refunded promptly.

I was issued a new CC which I have NOT added to my PayPal account.

I hardly ever use PayPal, but it's handy to have on occasion.

1331806 2013-03-07 20:58:00 Hubby used his PP for buying things on Ebay. Our credit card company picked up a fraud attempt last year just a couple of weeks before we headed overseas for a two-month trip. It seemed too much coincidence that it happened after making a lot of transport and accommodation bookings over the internet but we were thankful that it was picked up before we left rather than while we were away. It still caused a lot of inconvenience, however, but at least our CC company was on the ball. FoxyMX (5)
1331807 2013-03-07 21:16:00 I cancelled my PP account after a similar happening early last year. I must look into the debit card system. Sounds a good idea.
