Nope. The only thing I'm afraid about going to the dentist is what they charge. I go every 6 months.

1331661 2013-03-06 22:31:00 It's not really my favourite place to go but my arrangement with my dentist is that I probably only really need to visit once a year, unless I have a problem.

I grit my teeth (no pun intended) and bear it, plus, I just pay up, even though the credit card bleeds for a while. His prices seem to be fair. I am not sure, but I think the charges for regulars are a little less than for those who haven't seen a dentist in the last 5 years and longer.

This.

I see dentists as mechanics.

They charge in excess of what I consider acceptable as well as requesting you come back to have work done that is questionable at best.

NZ dentists seem to charge a ****-load, that's after talking to foreigners who are always shocked at the bill they receive after a dentist visit here.

And they are so damn rough.

1331664 2013-03-06 23:00:00 I go yearly - although I get reminders six-monthly. Haven't had a filling in years, although recently I had a couple of old fillings re-modelled (and surprised the dentist by turning down any pain relief - which I reckons hurts more and longer than the drilling does) and at some point I need to get a crown for a temporary fix I got in 2000.

Fees are on the high side - which is why yearly - but the equipment is modern and he employs an assistant as well, so all in all fair, I think.

If your dentist is rough, change your dentist. They're not all that way.

1331666 2013-03-06 23:06:00 I'm terrified. This goes back to primary school days when I had to endure much excruciating pain many times at the hands of the school dental nurse. I've avoided dentists ever since.

Consequently I now need some major work done, and the quote from a local dentist was $18,000 for extractions, insertion of an anchoring post, and partial dentures. $18K is just out of the question.

However, for $5K I can have the work done in the Phillipines. $5K includes the works including implants, safe anaesthesia, return air fares, 4 Star hotel accommodation for three weeks. I have the comfort of having been able to talk to the prospective surgeon together with my GP, and being able to talk to a couple of local people who have been patients of this same surgeon (whose brother is my neighbour). So a reasonably safe proposition I feel.

1331667 2013-03-06 23:09:00 I saw that on Breakfast this morning too. :p

I'm not afraid of the dentist, but I hate going, they bleed your wallet dry every time. I'm probably too young to have had any of the school dentist horror stories from back in the day happen to me.

Same here. Back in they day they put HUGE fillings in most kids' molars, top and bottom. There's no way a tooth could decay that much in 6 months (unless you sucked on sugar 24/7).
Therefore 1984 was my last visit.... until 4 years ago when I had a major toothache. Needed a root canal, one filling replaced, and surprisingly only 1 small new filling. I didn't have an injection for pain relief, he put this gel type stuff on and that was brilliant. I didn't feel a thing - where was that stuff in the 70s?!?!?!?!? Now I go once a year.
