1331375 2013-03-05 11:03:00 It would stop people crossing the center line. ;) R2x1 (4628)
1331376 2013-03-05 19:33:00 The original bridge design was for 10 lanes, 5 each way but in the usual way we do things in NZ.. paulw (1826)
1331377 2013-03-05 20:19:00 Just before the Yanks left at the end of WWII they said that they were prepared to build Auckland a harbour bridge as a thank you for the way Aucklanders had looked after them during the war years. (Thousands of Yanks passed through Auckland and other parts of the country on training and leave.) Those in charge at the time said that they did not need a harbour bridge and politely refused. Crazy! Roscoe (6288)

1331379 2013-03-05 21:24:00 I think you may be right Gobe.

Did you realise that those solid looking concrete bridge abutments are actually hollow. They are there only for the effect of stability they give. The actual piles supporting the bridge are obvious when you are standing inside the structure.

1331380 2013-03-05 21:57:00 The sight of the extra length of the supports inside the piers might have put people off as well, I think they go to just above sea level. Whenu (9358)

And a tunnel through the Rimutakas, Wairarapa <-> Welly.
