2013-09-24 07:00:00 | Currently, I have my laptop connected to an external monitor (ghetto desktop haha), and my laptop is becoming a bottleneck for my otherwise good desk setup (5.1 Logitech Z506, 23 inch monitor etc) so I wanna move up to a desktop. I won't be playing the most extreme games like Battlefield 4 and stuff, but I know I want one to last me through high school, so 4 years (first year of h.s for me). So here is my intended setup... CPU: Intel Core i5-4570 3.2GHz Quad-Core Processor ($274.84 @ PB Technologies) CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO 82.9 CFM Sleeve Bearing CPU Cooler ($56.35 @ PB Technologies) Motherboard: Asus H87-PRO ATX LGA1150 Motherboard ($182.00 @ Paradigm PCs) Memory: G.Skill Ares Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1866 Memory ($129.00 @ Paradigm PCs) Storage: Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive ($125.34 @ PB Technologies) Video Card: Asus GeForce GTX 660 2GB Video Card ($319.95 @ Computer Lounge) Case: Corsair 300R ATX Mid Tower Case ($152.00 @ Paradigm PCs) Power Supply: Antec EarthWatts Platinum 650W 80 PLUS Platinum Certified ATX12V / EPS12V Power Supply ($201.48 @ Aquila Technology) Optical Drive: Asus BW-12B1ST/BLK/G/AS Blu-Ray/DVD/CD Writer ($194.35 @ PB Technologies) Operating System: Microsoft Windows 7 Professional SP1 (OEM) (64-bit) ($220.00 @ Paradigm PCs) Total: $1855.31 (Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available.) (Generated by PCPartPicker 2013-09-24 18:00 NZST+1200) Or should I uprate the system? CPU: Intel Core i5-4670K 3.4GHz Quad-Core Processor ($327.75 @ PB Technologies) CPU Cooler: Corsair H60 54.0 CFM Liquid CPU Cooler ($123.00 @ Paradigm PCs) Motherboard: Asus Z87-C ATX LGA1150 Motherboard ($211.00 @ Paradigm PCs) Memory: G.Skill Ares Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1866 Memory ($129.00 @ Paradigm PCs) Storage: Samsung 840 Series 120GB 2.5" Solid State Disk ($145.00 @ PC Force) Storage: Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive ($125.34 @ PB Technologies) Video Card: Asus GeForce GTX 660 2GB Video Card ($319.95 @ Computer Lounge) Case: Corsair 300R ATX Mid Tower Case ($152.00 @ Paradigm PCs) Power Supply: Antec EarthWatts Platinum 650W 80 PLUS Platinum Certified ATX12V / EPS12V Power Supply ($201.48 @ Aquila Technology) Optical Drive: Asus BW-12B1ST/BLK/G/AS Blu-Ray/DVD/CD Writer ($194.35 @ PB Technologies) Operating System: Microsoft Windows 7 Professional SP1 (OEM) (64-bit) ($220.00 @ Paradigm PCs) Total: $2148.87 (Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available.) | 1354203 | 2013-09-25 05:00:00 | Get the cheaper system, then add the SSD from the other system and you will be fine for the next few years. | darkoverlord123 (16996) | |

2013-09-25 08:25:00 | Are those WD Black Drives any better? The blues are about $40 cheaper. That PSU seems a little expensive. Or is it one of those high efficiency models? I got my Corsair CX750 for $140 (though it is at the bottom of the corsair line).

2013-09-25 09:22:00 | Black drives are faster than blues. Not sure if there's much benefit if you have an SSD... Unless you're using fraps or similar. In regards to the PSU you're paying $20 more for gold efficiency, 5 year warranty (vs 3 on the corsair) and the psu being modular which is totally worth it imo. Personally I wouldn't bother with 1866mhz ram. The performance increase from the extra mhz is tiny, this is usually because higher clocks means higher CAS latency which will decrease performance at the same time minimizing the gains from the extra clocks. Better off just getting a stick of cheaper 1600mhz stuff. In regards to the case I picked the R4 as it's one of the quietest cases you can buy (short of going fanless or something). Even with stock/cheaper fans it's quiet. If this isn't a big deal I would recommend just buying whatever, there's nothing amazing about the 300R so unless you really like the look of the case then you can buy pretty much whatever. Personally I'd go for the biggest case I could get in the $100-$150 price range (even if it's second hand) just to make working around a 7970 easy. If you do want a quiet case but don't want to spend $200 on the R4 the Bit Fenix Ghost is an excellent option. | icow (15313) | |
2013-09-25 10:10:00 | Blacks have a reputation for being less reliable and blues are pretty close in performance. My opinion, drop the hyper 212 and use stock cooling, get a blue drive, use the savings towards a GTX760 graphics card which will make more difference in games than any other item on your list. Otherwise go with the first option. you could also opt for a cheaper motherboard if you want, there is not too much difference outside of overclocking abilities except number of ports, RAM slots etc. Performance is near enough the same between a $150 motherboard and a $400 one if you run at stock. While the K CPU's are nice and free performance is awesome I'd suggest for the extra money and effort to overclock you won't notice a difference most of the time. For example I had a 2500K clocked at 4.2 and I game a lot, after a BIOS update I forgot to redo the overclock and ran at stock speeds for 3 months without noticing. This time round I went for an i7 3770 and stock cooler instead of a i5 3570K and hyper 212

2013-09-25 10:13:00 | I hear overclocking is pretty average on haswell anyway. Ivy and sandy were much better overclockers. | icow (15313) | |
| 1354211 | 2013-09-26 03:32:00 | I was going to suggest an IB CPU rather than Haswell (which run hotter) and an ASRock board...for a 4Ghz IB out of the box...
