How could this happen to a SOE with Treasury as the Watchdog?

Bloody useless Watchdog by any standards, so I wonder what shocks are in store with Mighty River?

Key might have a point trying to sell the shares to the Mum & Dad investors because the "Big Boys" will do due diligence and that will be the end of things if Treasury has made an equally fine job of monitoring Mighty River too.

I’m not one of John Campbell’s greatest fans, but he seems to have done a good job here.

1332320 2013-03-12 05:44:00 Extremely creative use of a Balance Sheet.

At what point will this ever result in these bumbling CEO's being imprisoned, or asked to refund their very generous bonus payments?

Seems to me that both brains and ethics were lacking in their CEO, and in the team of Yes Men beneath the BS artist.

Hope his current employers are taking a serious look at his work and his remuneration.

1332322 2013-03-12 19:11:00 The whole thing is quite bizarre.

How can the Company say it is worth $3.5b and a respected Accountancy Firm say it’s worth $1.9b ($1,900,000,000) less and Treasury don’t raise an eyebrow or turn a hair?

Using their business principles I think I will float a company (you can all apply for shares) that relies on us winning Big Wednesday, Saturdays Lotto and the Pick Six at the races and we’ll do it week after week.

I know you’ll be tripping over each other to obtain shares, but get in quick before my $1m Spin Campaign kicks in and the share price rockets.

Seriously, shoot the burglars and shoot the Watchdog I say.

1332324 2013-03-12 20:07:00 Yes surely they ran a set of accounts each month.
This would have shown falling coal sales
And rising expenses
So they should have started cutting back, way back then.
What was their board doing?

And why do we pay so many idiots to work in Treasury, they never get anything right. (eg 170,000 new jobs over the last few years)

1332325 2013-03-12 20:10:00 But what does "Accountable" actually mean or result in ? (I think Winston coined the term)

You admit it and say sorry
You admit it and don't say sorry
You get the sack with a $100,000 bonus
You get the sack with no bonus
You get the sack and get made to pay it all back
You get shot ?

1332326 2013-03-13 07:08:00 Well, knock me down with a feather duster.

We’re stuffed with these dorks running the country.

Take a look at THIS (www.stuff.co.nz) and inwardly digest.

"Labour has tabled documents in Parliament showing that ministers put pressure on Solid Energy in 2009 to increase its debt levels and pay bigger dividends, despite warnings a falling coal price could crimp its profits."

So you borrow to increase dividends! :crying

1332327 2013-03-13 07:52:00 So do all those out there still think National are doing a good job? If so its time you all removed your heads from the sand, they are doing an appalling job gary67 (56)
1332328 2013-03-13 20:48:00 Yes as Humphey would say - Appalling.

But Labour would do worse - they want to give free this, free that, buy this, do that all on borrowed money.

Then we would end up like France or Italy or Venezuela.
