1332083 2013-03-10 05:23:00 We have a dry spell and the farmers have declared it a Drought. They stripped all the forest and the top soil washed away. For years they have used fertilizer and over stocked. Now the farmers want a hand out from the tax payer! Where I come from we only had rain 3 months of the year, but the top soil was intact and the land not overstocked. But then, Farmers are always pleading poverty, if it's not too dry its too wet. They are very lucky to have a guaranteed market for their produce. mzee (3324)

Not all farmers supply Fonterra.

Farming is a risky business and underpins the NZ economy (like it or not). We have a vested interest in making sure they don't go belly up. If farmers do well, we do well. They have a bad year - they stop buying seed, fertilizer, new farm machinery - and WE suffer.

1332087 2013-03-10 06:44:00 Notice how farmers are receiving very low returns for their livestock and the resulting fall in meat prices at the Supermarket, their are plenty of opportunists lining up to take advantage of the dry spell

Next one off the block will be Power Companies due to low Lake levels in the North Island we will have to increase the price even though when they were spilling down South not long ago there was no no price drop due to opportunity to rape the market for all they are worth

Yes farmers have been encouraged to take on debit much the same as home owners that have been encouraged to buy a Rental/s in a rising market it's called greed

Not only is going to felt this year but will roll into next year, the only silver lining will be an elevated dairy payout for next year as their is a Dairy product shortage worldwide

1332088 2013-03-10 06:59:00 This summer is like the summers we had in the seventies. We must have gone through a wet period since the seventies and now its come right.Term drought relative, Australia have droughts that last for years we have a summer with little rain and its a drought.
I have been sucking water out of a creek near a reserve to keep the lawn green.

The farmers do not/will not get a hand out. They get things like deferred tax payments not reductions. A guaranteed market does not work if you do not have production. Meat and dairy prices and all a lot less than a year or two ago, and most have some away for a "dry" day, but need a hand up not a hand out in most cases. Sure there will be some who have over committed themselves, that is their fault.

well 100% of the farmers on the news have been dairy farmers. 95% of dairy farmers are with fonterra. As for the cattle and sheep farmers, well I love my beef and lamb so I hope it will be coming through cheap...
But yes I do have sympathy for them.
