207614 2004-01-15 07:36:00 I have a new computer running Windows XP Home.
I installed MS Office.
When I go to My documents & click on either a Word or Excel document I get a message stating: ****.doc is being used by ****. Do you want to make a copy? My options are OK or Cancel. I click on Cancel and the document opens a-ok and I continue on.
Why is this happening & what can I do to get rid of the message.
The computer isnot part of a network, it is a stand alone.
One there thing, if I open Word or Excel program 1st, then open the document, no message appears!??

Thank you

You receive that message if you already have that document open. Check to see the document is not already open.

207617 2004-01-15 08:37:00 Dis you transfer the documents over to this PC via a backup copy on a CD? godfather (25)
207618 2004-01-15 09:11:00 It may be because Word didnt close properly at some stage so its believing that there is another user using the file/s, which could in fact be yourself even though your not omnipresent :-)

See if you have any files that start with ~$ which denotes a temporary file (For example, the owner file for Document.doc is named ~$cument.doc.). If you do then delete the files with this prefix as they are indicating to Word that the file is being used.

This shouldnt happen with every file though, only the ones that start with ~$. Does this happen with every Word doc or just some and is the source your HD?

207619 2004-01-15 09:13:00 If they were transferred to this PC using a CD copy, they will be marked "read only", which can cause these problems. godfather (25)
207620 2004-01-15 10:18:00 I get the same thing using Word 97, it used to really bug me but I got over it. Godfather has solved this for me now too ... it is the transferred files that are read only that it brings up that message. Thanks, GF :) Jester (13)
207621 2004-01-15 20:39:00 No these files were not transfered via a CD.
I attached my old hard drive as a 2ndry and transferred them over to My Documents. Thank you all, I will check if these are "read only".

207622 2004-01-15 22:29:00 I know exactly this problem. I have 3 PC's installed in this office, all bought as new with MS Windows XP and I installed MS Office 97 on each of them. No errors, all updates carried out correctly, no second installations etc etc - a clean fresh install but I have the same problem as NZHawk. The thing is that 2 of the three users always open Word or Excel first, and then open a document from the 'file' menu. No problem here. But the other user always uses explorer to find his document first and double-clicks it to open the app to edit it - thats when the 'two docs open' message comes up. I am resigned to the fact that it is a clash with the 'older' (but certainly not out-of-date) Office 97 apps and the latest MS Windows XP. So we have been living with this glitch for quite a while and we just get by with the odd anoying message. Can anyone either correct me on this, or confirm it is a product clash bug??
Cheers.

207623 2004-01-15 22:43:00 Actually, just to clarify. We only have this problem with Excel documents, not Word documents. Hmmm.
If I open Execl and create a new worksheet and save it normally and exit Excel, then browse with My Computer or Explorer to locate the file and double-click it to open Excel it always brings up this message - certainly no 'read-only' attribute involved. My message says "A document with the name ... is already open. You cannot open two documents with the same name, even if the documents are in different folders etc etc." And don't tell me it's the double-click trying to open it twice! :o
