207572 2004-01-15 05:12:00 Hi i just got a new 2nd hand computer off trademe. A Compaq Deskpro EP with a intel celeron 500 mhz and 64 mb ram.

I made a win98se start up disk but when i set the boot order to Hard drive first and put the floppy disk in it says "Invalid System disk - replace and press any key"

I also installed a cd-rom drive, and i went out and bought a new ide cable so i could have harddrive and cd-rom at the same time so i assume i set it up right. I put the harddrive on the middle connector and cd-rom at the end of the ide cable. Are there any settings (jumpers) on the harddrive i need to change for it?

Please help

If you set the priority to HDD first, then just how is it going to see the FDD to boot from the 98 boot disk?

The jumpers are on the back of the HDD and the CD Rom.

The HDD should be set for Master and the CD Rom for Slave.

207574 2004-01-15 05:45:00 Um, when i set it to floppy drive to boot first its just a _ blinking

I can press enter and then the floppy drive works a bit and then back to _ blinking

I am not to sure about the jumpers, bit of a n00b on hdds.

If i go into into (in Compaq Computer Corporation setup util) and goto Storage - IDE Device it says Primery Drive 0 = 6447 megs and primary drive 1 = ATAPI Device

It also recognises the floppy drive in Diskette Drives

207575 2004-01-15 05:54:00 I think some Compaqs use a different bios system and boot disk configuration, maybe a standard win 98 boot disk won't work. I had a similar problem with an old Compaq Deskpro and found out using Google how to bypass the Compaq bios. This was an old win95 machine, and I cannot recall exactly what I did, sorry.

What happens if you type in a: then press enter?

As for the hard drive and cd rom, I would put both units at the end of the two separate IDE cables, and have them both set to master. On the back of the CD you will see ma, sl and cs - or similar - master, slave and cable select. The hard drive should have a diagram on it which shows where you place the jumper.

Ensure that the hard drive cable goes to the first ide socket on the motherboard, the cd rom goes to the second.

207576 2004-01-15 06:35:00 From my seeings i cannot see another IDE socket. There one that goes to the floppy drive. And then one that goes to the harddrive (originally) untill i bought another IDE cable today and used that. There is a big white socket next to the ide socket.

if i do A: it the hdd and floppy works for a bit and then does nothing. still _ blinking

Do i need this compaq boot disk? if so where?

207577 2004-01-15 07:10:00 try putting the hd into the end plug and the cd rom onto the middle controller. you may have put the cd rom as master and the hd as slave. Megaman (344)
207578 2004-01-15 07:21:00 Ok after struggling with my hdd i got it out and set the jumper to master, but i dont have a jumper for the cd-rom ...if i need one

I found out i did have a secondary ide socket, so i used original hdd ide cable and my new ide cable for cd-rom.

Stil when i try using win98 startup boot disk its just a _.
Although when i take it out and press a key it says invalid and then put it back in it is _ blinking

The F10 computer (ROM Bios) setup utility for this model normally resides on the hard drive on a special partition . Pressing the F10 key during boot when the cursor flashes in the upper right of the display/monitor will bring up this utility . If this does not happen, then the utility is damaged or is not installed .

Then it would be necessary to download the F10 setup file from the Compaq Internet site to the hard drive of this or some other computer . Execute the executable file and read the instructions or read the associated Text/Help file shown above . The result will be one or more bootable disk that can be used to boot the computer into the Bios setup utility . This Setup boot disk can be used any time that the computer Bios/Cmos setup needs to be changed . The special F10 partition can be restored to the hard drive to restore use of the F10 key to activate it . To do this would require the disk drive to be cleaned by running Fdisk and Format and starting over with the drive (this would remove all data from the drive) . This is usually not worth it to simply have the ability to press the F10 key to run the setup when it can be run at any time by booting to the bootable setup disk .

207580 2004-01-15 08:18:00 The problem i think is that it is not bringing up the win98 bootdisk screen.

It doesnt even do this on my main computer (bring on win98 bootdisk screen)
