207344 2004-01-14 07:29:00 Someone at another location has asked for some help .

She is running WindowsXP . I understand it is the Pro version .

Nortons AV 3002 is her choice of virus protection .

Last couple of weeks, random restarts from several a day to none for a couple of days at a time . No error message upon restart .

She put the random restarts down to heat and humidity and moved to a cooler part of the house . Does not solve the problem .

She is also unable to do a complete virus scan in either normal or safe mode, gets a way into it and then coughs up the following .

I suspect a virus personally but time and distance is too far to look at it personally .

Error message from the failed virus scan is below .

-----------------------------------------------

The system has recovered from a serious error

Does the above make sense to anyone . ?

She gave me a long list of things running in msconfig > startup . I have been through that list and got her to remove anything not needed at startup . None of it was adware and none appear to be virus related . I used google and tasklist for the research .

She has run both Spybot and Lava's Adaware . Nothing exciting came up .

Her home page remains untouched .

I get quite a few business emails from her each day, all have come up virus free .

Apart from the random restarts and unable to complete a full virus scan even in safe mode, everything works just fine .

Be inerested in knowing if anyone can shed some light on the above error message, that might hold the key .

Cheers all .

207345 2004-01-14 09:44:00 Ask if she has Roxio Easy CD Creator 5.0 installed. If she does, it needs to be upgraded to a later version. This is a known incompatibility issue with XP which will give those sorts of error messages and performance problems.

Read more here (support.microsoft.com).

207346 2004-01-14 10:07:00 Had another thought on this and if the Roxio Easy Creator theory doesn't apply, it would be good to set her computer to stop on errors and give a BSOD instead so that more information can be obtained, rather than the default auto reboot upon errors.

To do this go to Control Panel > System > Advanced Tab. Under Start up and Recovery click the settings button, under System Failure remove the tick from beside "Automatically restart", then click OK. See what sort of STOP messages that reveals when it next happens.
