| 207624 | 2004-01-15 23:02:00 | Weird, what do you have for the open action under the DOC file association? For WordXP I have this so see if DDE etc is correct for your settings. App used to perform application = <path to winword.exe> /n /dde DDE Message = [REM _DDE_Direct][FileOpen("%1")] |

| 207625 | 2004-01-15 23:26:00 | Heh now you're getting somewhere - I didn't think to check the file association, dohh. I'm not 100% sure of these settings, but I notice that the 'open' action in my file associations for Winword and Excel (doc and xls) are as follows: Winword: "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\winword.exe" /n Excel: C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\excel.exe %1 I noted that there were no """ (speech marks) around the Excel app to launch so I added them as follows: "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\excel.exe" %1 and voila, problem solved!!! Whooppee. Simple. It just takes a bit of communication right? - I should've thought of checking that. Well done and many thanks parry. Hope it helps others who may have similar problem. |

| 207627 | 2004-05-14 04:31:00 | Just found your communications about Word and Excel files being indicated as being in use. I just installed Office 97 on my new Windows XP system and have both thew Word and Excel problems - so was happy to see your solutions. But I'm now in deeper! I decided to check the Word program out first so I used My Computer/Tools/FolderOptions/File Types to check out 'DOC'. I found it had 4 'associations', one each for New, Open, Print, and Printto. I saw that the New association had speech marks around it (as you saw) but the Open one didn't - so I added them. Now when I try to open a file I get 4 successive warning messages saying 'Can not open the document, document name or path not valid', and then the file finally opens! But this is more annoying than the original single warning message I was getting so I tried to delete the speech marks I had added. But I can't as I get a message saying 'The specified program could not be found - make sure the specified file name and path are correct'. Can someone help me get back to at least where I was to start! PS: I looked around at the associations for 2 other extensions I use: XLS (Microsoft Excel) and LWP (Lotus Word Processor). XLS (like DOC) has a mixture of speech marks and no speech marks on its 4 associations while LWP has no speech marks on any of its associations. I'm not brave enough to try altering any more speech marks |
