207581 2004-01-15 07:35:00 Wondering if someone can help, Ive just re-installed Win98SE and I think ive gone and done something stupid! I think Ive deleted the Network Neighbourhood thing.

Ive just reinstalled my Ethernet Cards drivers and now whenever I start Windows it gives me grief about something in the System.ini or windows registry referring to vredir.vxd that the machine can't find!

I then press a button and get a similar message about dfs.vxd.

Next it starts and I get a little grey box telling me that msnp32.ddl dynamic library isn't there and it will effect Microsoft Networking.

Anyone know how to retreive these? andor is it possible to just reinsert Microsoft Network Neighbourhood?

I know its my own dumb fault but help!

207582 2004-01-15 08:04:00 I dont think you can delete Network Neighborhood. The absence of it suggests you dont have networking setup properly. Those files are normally in c:\windows\system, and hopefully will get installed when the network is fully installed. Terry Porritt (14)
207583 2004-01-15 08:26:00 Ok thanks but how do I do the install of the network? BigMarv (4875)
207584 2004-01-15 09:58:00 Just seen your post as about to shut down, so will come back on this tomorrow.
However maybe first of all try extracting dfs.vxd and vredir.vxd from net9.cab, and msnp32.dll from net7.cab on the Win98 CD using System File Checker, and see what happens.

Cheers

207585 2004-01-15 19:07:00 Next thing is to check that the network card is working properly by going into Device Manager where there should not be any yellow exclamation marks, and under Properties is says this device is working properly.

If there is a problem then remove the device from Device Manager, (also check that the card is seated properly) and let windows re-detect it, loading the drivers if prompted to do so, with the Have Disk option if Windows doesnt find them built in.

Then open Network icon in Control Panel, and with the Add button you can add a Microsoft Dial-Up Adapter if you are on dial up. Also add Client for Microsoft Networks. Then you need to add a Protocol(s), TCP/IP.

I can never seem to get file sharing to work properly using TCP/IP between different windows versions, so I use NetBEUI, but that is just my preference.

You also need to activate File and printer sharing.

That is just the very bare outlines.

There is a FAQ about networking on PF1 (which I havent read for a long time) and also many sites from Google if you search for networking information.

The Network Neighborhood icon will appear on the Desktop when the networking components are installed.

207586 2004-01-16 18:59:00 Thanks Terry,
Following some possibly suspect advice from another friend I have just re-installed Windows .
I now have a fresh 'virgin' install of Windows 98SE . Unsullied by my dodgy attempts to do anything weird .

On my old install (the one before I had the trouble mentioned in my post) after I installed the software for my network card I got the message that the system . ini or the windows registry was searching for 'vserver . vxd' . I lived with it for a while as it just meant that I had to punch any key to continue loading Windows .

On the last install of windows this problem went away . . . Until I tried to install the Network card drivers . . . All of a sudden I got the messages that I mentioned in the post, no vnetsup . vsd, then I hit the key, no vedir . vxd, then I hit the key, no dfs . vxd and after I hit the key for a final time windows continued to load before giving me a final nice 'windows type box saying no msnp32 . dll and that Windows Networking was not working .

So Ive just done a fresh install of Windows 98SE again, now Im a little apprehensive about trying to install the network drivers in case I get this lovely situation again . . .

Any advice? One thought I had was to dload the drivers fresh from the site and try those, but im still worried that its going to ask for these vxd things which I still (on a fresh install of Windows) don't seem to have!

Thanks for all your advice so far,

Regards,

Big Marv!

207587 2004-01-17 01:00:00 I suspect the problem may be either in the way the network drivers are being loaded, and/ or whether windows asking for a place or CD to go to to fetch those files? Those particular files, from memory, are installed when the drivers are installed, but are asked for from the W98 CD.

Did you try extracing those files from the install CD using System File Checker?

When installing windows, if network and sound card are not built into the motherboard it is usually best to load windows without those cards fitted, then when you are happy windows is working ok install cards one at a time, windows should detect a card and ask for the drivers if it doesnt have them already. Windows 98 is fairly intelligent but sometimes cant cope with installing the OS and all device drivers at once.

If sound and network are onboard, then all the drivers should be on the motherboard CD, and again windows should ask for the CD when it reaches the stage to load them.

Sorry this is all a bit vague.
