207551 2004-01-15 03:24:00 A few days ago I registered and posted my first message. For some reason it never made it --- can't imagine why. Anyhow, never say die so here we go again. I guess there are quite a number like me who have no Windows XP setup CD and when its necessary to replace or reinstall a corrupted system file we have to go to the XP image pre-installed on our HDD, in my case the setup files in the i386 folder on drive D. The sfc /scannow utility won't work for me because it refuses to scan without a setup CD so you're in a no-win situation --- unless of course there is another way to reinstall system files other than via the sfc utility.... or is it possible to reconfigure the sfc so that it will still scan minus the CD? sunhawk3 (5115)

www.updatexp.com

By the way, it usually asks for the XP Professional CD even with XP Home, its a bug.

You need to tell your computer where the 'setup' files are on your PC, by modifying the registry.
Click START | RUN and in the RUN window type REGEDIT and click OK.

Navigate (in the left-hand registry pane) to the following location

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Setup

In the right-hand pane locate the one called:

SourcePath

It probably points to the CD-ROM drive (which is why it asks for the Windows XP cd) Therefore change this value to:

<whatever the source location is on your harddrive> e.g. C:\I386

by double clicking the SourcePath value and putting your value into the pop-up window that appears

If the above value did not exist then create it: right click in the right-pane and select New String value and name it SourcePath,
when created double-click on the SourcePath value and insert the appropriate value (same as above)

Next exit from the Registry and...

Finally reboot your PC and retry the SFC /SCANNOW command

Cheers, Babe.
