207447 2004-01-14 20:29:00 this isnt a mac v. pc post, this is more of a i-want-to-get-an-outdated-os-for-my-outdated-pc-but-dont-no-which-one-to-get.

i have an amdk5 166mhz, 32mb ram, 40gb hd 8 year old pc (still going strong) running mandrake linux 9.0. i find it really slow (i wonder why ;)) and clunky to use. so i was wondering should i get windows 95, win 98 or windows nt? i have no drivers for any of my hardware at all. i plan to use it for email, internet (access through windows xp) open office, backup for the windows xp and a few games. i am most probably going to get windows nt cos its cheeper from trademe ;)

207448 2004-01-14 20:30:00 eh? why's it in bold? Megaman (344)
207449 2004-01-14 21:02:00 Win98SE.

WinNT is a bit annoying to use, because it's so network-oriented (well that's my opinion anyway).

207450 2004-01-14 21:05:00 The K5 is a very reliable CPU. The most likely reasons for the slow speed are:-
Your RAM is only 32megs, increase this to 128megs.
Your hard drive is probably a very slow one, replace it with a new 7200rpm drive. You will find that it is really fast after these mods.

I run Windows ME on my K5 and find it to be very good. I have tried XP on it but it was very sluggish. At different times I have tried Linux Mandrake 7 & 9.2 also Yopar. I don't like Linux because it hasn't any good Web editor software which I need. Linux is excellent for Data base, server etc.

Windows NT is only suitable for Office type applications & does not support USB ports.

207451 2004-01-14 21:11:00 Considering it's a 40GB hard drive in an 8 year old PC, it's probably been added recently, so it should be quite new (and 7200rpm). somebody (208)
207452 2004-01-14 21:13:00 Added to the above.

The driver library in ME is excellent and will set up most hardware.
Drivers are scarce in NT and difficult with Linux.

You could also use Windows 98 secon edition, but I find ME easier to install and very reliable on the K5.

I found my K6/300 also v reliable, running 98SE. It is now sitting in a cupboard as a spare, but I should fire it up and have a play.

207454 2004-01-14 23:39:00 Maybe you should try Win ME, like Mzee said Win Me has good driver lib's. It could be troublesome if you want to play games without the correct driver. Blue_face (1148)
207455 2004-01-14 23:53:00 With only 32mb it would have to be win 95/98 . NT needs more ram and sucks for gaming .

I would avoid ME because it adds more bloat and 98 will still be fairly slow with only 32mb .

207456 2004-01-15 01:54:00 The RAM would DEFINATELY be the biggest bottleneck, throw in another 128+ and you oughta renew the life of it. Stick with Win98SE IMO.

Windows XP will always be slow on anything under 128MB RAM, the more the better!

IIRC, Yoper is optimised for i686, and the K5/6 still falls under i586 IIRC.

BTW - Quanta is quite a nice editor, get it from the KDE site :-)

Chill.
